Jackson Health System picks new chief operating officer

Jackson Health System announced Tuesday it has selected a chief operating officer to be the No. 2 in command for Miami-Dade's beleaguered safety-net system.

David R. Small, a veteran administrator with 35 years in the healthcare business, has been named to the post by Eneida Roldan, Jackson's chief executive.

Small's last position was in Chicago, where he was chief operating officer and interim chief executive of Cook County Health and Hospitals System, another public entity that has been struggling financially.

On Tuesday, a story on Page 1B about H1N1 vaccinations in public schools misstated the groups operating health teams and giving H1N1 swine-flu shots in Miami-Dade schools. The teams are run by Citrus Health Network, Community Health of South Florida, Health Choice Network, Helen B. Bentley Family Health Center, Jesse Trice Community Center, Miami Children's Hospital, Jackson Health System, Institute for Child & Family Health, University of Miami/Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation and Borinquen Health Care Center. Funding for the teams is provided by The Children's Trust at $14 million annually.

Jackson Health Systems chief charts hospital's rebound

At 8, she dissected a dead lizard with her grandmother's kitchen knife. At 24, she was a doctor-in-training when her husband proposed to her in a Jackson Memorial snack shop.

Eneida Roldan became a pathologist, operator of nutrition clinics, got two advanced degrees, helped a small hospital out of bankruptcy. Now she's taken on the daunting task of leading Miami-Dade's public health system as it struggles with massive losses.

She says she was offered other jobs -- with much more prosperous hospitals -- before she joined the Jackson Health System. She doesn't regret turning them down. ``I would have been bored.''

Jackson Health System adds to `new team' as 3 leave

Continuing to mold a new team to lead the Jackson Health System, Chief Executive Eneida Roldan said Tuesday she is bringing in a new vice president of business development and hopes to have a new chief operating officer by the end of the year.

Mike Casanova, a veteran South Florida healthcare consultant, will lead the effort to bring in new business, a key because Miami-Dade's government system hopes to find new ways to bring in revenue to make up for losses from treating growing numbers of the uninsured. Casanova has been an executive with Surgical Park in Miami and PCA Health Plans of Florida.

``He is part of a new team,'' Roldan said. ``We need to grow.''
