What type of business should I start?

More times than I'd like to admit, folks come into the Florida Atlantic University Small Business Development Center and ask us to tell them which businesses are making money so that they can buy or open that type of business.

I just shake my head and wonder, ``What are they thinking?''

Obviously, in every type of business at any given time, some establishments are making money and some are losing money. Just because an entrepreneur knows of an auto shop that is making money does not mean that anyone can open and run a successful auto shop. The same goes for any type of business.

So the question is not, ''Which businesses are making money?'' It should be: ``What kind of business should I start?''

How do you determine this? Here are a few questions:

• What are you great at?

I said great, not good or competent. GREAT! What are you so wonderful at that people have always complimented you for it and you love doing it? The bottom line is that if you are not great at it and you do not love it, why would you open a particular type of business? You do know you will be working very hard and sacrificing a great deal for your business, so you might as well be passionate about it. If not, just get a job.

• What are your talents and skills?

Talents are the things you came with and developed. Skills are the things you learned along the way. Most people have not identified their talents and skills, but it is around them that you will build a business. This becomes very important because if you know what you are strong in, you then will know what you are weak in. This, in turn, answers the question about whom you want on your team, because these people will need to have the talents and skills that complement yours.

• Why do you want to start a business?

I want to be my own boss; I want to run the show; I want be in control. These are just a few of the self-centered reasons why some folks start a business. However, a business should be started because you have a burning passion to use your talents and skills to improve the quality of life of other people, since this is key to ensuring your venture will find a market.

• Should I start, buy or franchise?

Starting your own business is usually the riskiest option because everything is new. No one will know you and you will have no customer base.

Buying is normally less risky because the business will have customers and a proven track record.

Franchising is also a good choice if you understand that you're buying into a business model and must be willing to work within the model.
