Latin Trade magazine to honor Mexican president

Miami Herald Staff Report

Latin Trade, a leading business magazine focusing on Latin America and the Caribbean, has announced that Mexican President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa will be recognized as the Leader of the Year at its annual Bravo Business Awards.

The awards ceremony, likened to the Oscars of Latin American business, will be held Oct. 30 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Miami, in conjunction with the Latin Trade Symposium.

The symposium is being organized in partnership with the Inter-American Development Bank and the Americas Society/Council of the Americas. This year's symposium will focus on the hemisphere's response to the global economic crisis, with a special emphasis on how Mexico is meeting the challenges.

Calderón, elected president in 2006, earned the Leader of the Year award for his stand against organized crime, mobilizing military troops to end violence and reforming the criminal justice system, according to Latin Trade.

The magazine also cited his efforts to win congressional approval for reforms of the energy sector and tax structure, as well as his role in guiding the recovery of the Mexican economy through the global recession. Latin Trade, which has offices in Coral Gables, also lauded his swift and transparent handling of the swine flu epidemic.

The Bravo Business awards recognize nine other Latin American and Caribbean leaders. Latin Trade readers submit nominations, from which winners are chosen by the magazine's staff in consultation with international experts and award committees.
