AMERICAS CONFERENCE

Experts cite Latin America's timing to turn green

Now is the time for energy in Latin American to go green.

That was the message at a session at the Americas Conference Wednesday.

``This is one of the best times in the energy sector,'' said speaker Leandro Alves, energy manager of the Infrastructure and Environmental Sector for the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington. ``Climate change is now in the conscience of every citizen of the world.''

This was one of the reasons he cited for the energy field to become more environmentally friendly.

Likening the energy sector to the telecommunications industry that enjoyed a boom in the 1980s, Alves cited technology advances and the sinking economy for setting things in motion. Governments, he noted, were forced to create stimulus funds in the tough economic times and many of them were green-minded.

``We're on the verge of seeing the same modality in the energy sector,'' Alves said. ``We see this as a huge leap forward.''
