$18,000 deposit on generator probably lost

Q. I'm writing for my boss, who has exhausted all means with Genco. She paid $18,000 for a generator. The permits were pulled, and then everything stopped.
No one answers the phone or responds to her letters. She's a single mom with a teenage son.

A. We have bad news.
Genco Power Solutions went broke last summer after blanketing South Florida with ads about generators that could power an entire home with natural gas or propane. Equipment and installation could cost as much as $30,000.
Although some customers who paid by credit card were able to get their money back, those who paid by check weren't so lucky. Genco had assets of less than $300,000, Michael Phelan, a court assignee, told The Palm Beach Post last August. That money was to be turned over to the company's largest secured creditor.
Genco filed for liquidation through a bankruptcy-like process known as ``general assignment for the benefit of creditors.''
