Census: Boomers' numbers striking

On July 1, 2006, there were 37.3 million people 65 and older in the U.S. They accounted for 12 percent of the population, according to the Census Bureau. Between 2005 and 2006, this age group increased by 473,000 people. By 2050, it's expected to grow to 86.7 million, or 21 percent of the population.

California had the greatest number of seniors: 3.9 million or 10.8 percent of its population of 36.5 million people. However, Florida's three million seniors represent 16.8 percent of a total population of 18 million.
