Art Basel's got a lot to offer, but so do local collectors

Forget about applying to business school. This may be the first time in history when local parents can encourage their kids to pick up a paintbrush as a savvy career move.

Art Basel Daily Picks:

CRITIC'S PICK

Fortunate Objects: Selections from the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection is a treasure trove of contemporary art, and hands-down, the best new exhibit in town. From Rafael Lozano-Hemmer's moving belt mobile, Standards and Double Standards, to the stacked Forever Bicycles by Ai Weiwei, this is a true VIP show, and fortunately for Miami, here through February. Open 9-noon today; regular hours 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday-Sunday. 1018 N. Miami Ave., Miami.

ARTIST'S PICK

Sculptor Ralph Provisero's choice is SCULPTURE at the The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse. On display: works by Isamu Noguchi, Joan Miro, Sol Lewitt, John Chamberlain, Claes Oldenburg, Richard Serra, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. ''Unbelievable,'' says Provisero. Open Sunday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 591 NW 27th St. Free. 305-576-1051.

-- JAWEED KALEEM

MIAMI GALLERIES

Miami artist Kristen Thiele first impressed with feline spins on the Old Masters. For Cocktails, she turns her playful gaze to another key cultural text: stemware catalogs -- on display at ArtCenter/South Florida, studio 102, 800 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach.

    FESTIVAL GUIDE

The main event stretches from Supernova to wish-list galleries

This year, Art Basel is upping the ante further with a separate exhibition space for Art Supernova, a new component of 20 galleries presenting new works in an experimental group show, or ''art commune.'' Also, Basel has expanded the Art Kabinett section, with 22 mini museum-quality exhibitions spaced out among the regular offerings. Art within art. More stuff you just can't miss. And that's only what's happening inside the Miami Beach Convention Center.

      UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI

Biology professor creates award-winning art with scientist's eye

Keith D. Waddington is both a scientist and an artist. The biology professor at the University of Miami has spent most of his life studying ''the particle secrets of how animals find their way through space,'' issues that ``concern construction, finding how things work.''

    • Collecting 101: Here are some tips on how you can get started

If you're looking for advice on starting a contemporary art collection, don't approach Peter Menéndez. ''If I hear one more person ask me what I bought recently, I'm going to pull out a gun and shoot them,'' he jokes. 'All they want is for me to say `This is going to be worth X in the future.' You have to learn what you're getting into first. Go out to the galleries. Go out to the museums. Talk to the dealers without worrying about buying anything.''

    • Quick picks for Sunday

CRITIC'S PICK Fortunate Objects: Selections from the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection is a treasure trove of contemporary art, and hands-down, the best new exhibit in town. From Rafael Lozano-Hemmer's moving belt mobile, Standards and Double Standards, to the stacked Forever Bicycles by Ai Weiwei, this is a true VIP show, and fortunately for Miami, here through February. • Family's collection just full of surprises

Oliver Wechsler may not be old enough to have extensively studied art history -- or even to have hit puberty. But he knows a striking sculpture when he sees one.

    • As his art collection grows, so too does the scope of his theme

Call him the accidental collector. When the Cuban-born Peter Menéndez arrived in New York City fresh from his 1963 graduation from Miami Beach Senior High, he quickly embraced the downtown art world.

    • South Beach collector stays in touch with the feminine side

Alberto Chehebar loves the ladies. Their images -- barely clothed, provocatively standing on their heads or trussed up in ropes -- fill his South Beach condo. Before you've even gotten past his front door, you're greeted by a Richard Kern photograph of a topless young woman, legs splayed in the air, yet still composed enough to fix the viewer with a sultry come-hither stare.

    • ART BASEL

      Wynwood buzzing during Basel

Once known for gangs and a riot that rocked Miami in 1990, the scene in gallery-packed Wynwood this weekend is a happy mirage. Strings of taxis inch down traffic-filled streets. Mobs of smart international tourists crowd sidewalks. The smattering of food spots hums with patrons.

    • ART BASEL

If the bubble has burst, no one's told art buyers

The Basel bubble hasn't burst -- yet. That's the consensus from galleries midway through Art Basel Miami Beach, who say the fair has maintained its signature sky-high prices despite the weak dollar and recession worries roiling Wall Street.

    • Visionaire party lives up to the hype

Despite the generous use of the word ''hottest'' to describe most, if not all, Art Basel parties, the Visionaire party at The Florida Room on Friday night was definitely deserving of the adjective in more ways than one.
