Married artists Pip and Duane Brant are taking their domestic squabbles to the creative arena with the exhibition The Flying Carpet at ArtCenter/South Florida. No flying plates here. The Brants' world is a whimsical territory of sewing-sound-machines (his invention) and a flying carpet (hers) that shakes and lights up when foot pedals are engaged.
Art shows don't often try to pick a fight with their viewers. But through a clever assemblage of eclectic sculpture and installation, Because I Say So at Florida International University's Frost Art Museum provokes another round of the age-old discussion: What is art?
If you walk into the Bass Museum of Art and think you're seeing things -- treehouses on the ground floor! -- relax and enjoy. They're part of the exhibition Simon Starling: Inverted Retrograde Theme, USA (House for a Songbird), which features a large-scale installation and two photographs by conceptual British artist Starling, who has pinned to the ceiling two scale models of prefabricated single-family houses propped on tree branches. The tree houses are Starling's interpretation of homes outside San Juan, Puerto Rico, built in the 1960s as part of a controversial development financed by the Rockefeller Foundation. With his artwork, Starling reflects on the complexity of realizing utopian aspirations in the modern world.
Champions of Little Havana as a cultural destination want art lovers to know that the district is staging exhibits beyond the famed Viernes Culturales, the popular revelry of art, food and music on the last Friday of the month. Opening at 8 p.m. Saturday is Oikos: Photographs by Juan Carlos Agüero, lush Everglades landscapes and wildlife portraits by a photographer who was an archaeology student in late-1980s Cuba and is now published in the calendar and the yearbook of the Florida Wildlife Federation and in a collaborative project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Celebrate Urban Birds.
Noted New York architect Charles Gwathmey, who died Monday in Manhattan at 71 from esophageal cancer, designed (in conjunction with the Miami firm Gelabert-Navia) the Museum of Contemporary Art at 770 NE 125th St., North Miami. That building went up in 1996.
Irreversible is a made-in-Miami art project but international in scope with contributors from as far away as Shanghai, Tokyo and Tenerife, Canary Islands. Like the city of its birth and the woman who conceived the project, Norelkys (Noor) Blazekovic, a former Venezuelan telenovela producer, Irreversible is tough to peg.
Invited by Fredric Snitzer Gallery, a group of artists has created specially themed works to benefit the Child Foundation Charity that funds quality-of-life surgeries for children with birth defects. The gallery will donate to the charity all its commission from sales of works such as Michael Vasquez's mixed media on canvas Obstacle Course. The exhibition's preview and opening, from 8 to 10 p.m. Saturday during the Wynwood Art Walk, features artist and ``DJ Whisperer'' Bert Rodríguez. Add another ``art walk'' to South Florida's calendar of cultural events: The Lincoln Road & Miami Beach Gallery Walk. The first stroll takes place from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, and returns on first Saturdays thereafter. Some 40 local artists, museums and galleries in South Beach will open their doors to showcase a variety of photography, painting, installation, mixed-media and video work.

Fifteen-year-old Haley Moss has overcome autism to become an accomplished self-taught artist who has exhibited her work in Coral Gables, and now, in Wynwood. Cuban artist Leandro Soto, a member of the ground-breaking 1980s generation on the island, has spent the last seven years as an artist in residence at Arizona State University. On Saturday, Soto brings his latest work -- including the abstract Yemaya installation -- to the Farside Gallery in West Miami-Dade. Opening reception starts at 7 p.m., followed by the performance art piece OLORUM:DURGA.ISIS.YEMAYA. Soto's new multimedia and performance installations are influenced by his exchanges...
If a hurricane were to hit St. Petersburg, one of Florida's most valuable cultural treasures -- the Salvador Dalí Museum, showcase of the largest collection of the surrealist artist's work outside Spain -- would most likely be destroyed by rising waters and boating debris strewn by winds from the marina across the street.
