NFC West: Cardinals move up a tier

The Sports Network

The most curious part of the 49ers' fourth-quarter collapse was the lack of carries for Gore, who ran for 101 yards and a score on 19 carries. The back got the ball on the final play of the third quarter before two pass plays led to a San Francisco punt.

The Eagles then scored.

Now up by just two, Niners quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan threw two incomplete passes before a completion to tight end Vernon Davis went for minus-seven yards, and the club punted.

Again, the Eagles scored.

Three turnovers later, and San Francisco was 2-4 on the season and two games out of first place in the NFC West.

"You know, we've just got to finish," said Gore. "I'm not the coach and I don't make the calls. The Eagles made big plays. We made mistakes and we lost the game. Our coach did what he thought was the best thing for us to get a first down and move the ball. We made mistakes toward the end. They (the Eagles) made big plays and they won the game."

UP NEXT: The 49ers hit the road to play the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants. New York had lost six in a row to San Francisco, including playoffs, before winning the last two meetings.

SEAHAWKS: HASSELBECK INJURY JUST THE LATEST SETBACK

First, Seattle was razor-thin at the wide receiver spot. Now the club is having trouble finding a quarterback to play.

The Seahawks were forced to use their No. 3 QB on Sunday, and paid for it with a 27-17 loss to Green Bay. Starter Matt Hasselbeck was out due to a hyperextended right knee suffered in a loss to the Giants the previous week, and missed his first game since a knee injury caused him to sit out a November 19, 2006 meeting with San Francisco.

With backup Seneca Wallace also slowed by a calf injury, Charlie Frye got his first start since Week 1 of last year and threw for just 83 yards on 12-of-23 passing, with two touchdown throws and two interceptions.

There are now rumblings in Seattle that Hasselbeck, who has missed just 10 games in his 10-year career, might be out for an extended period of time due to his injury. If true, that could be the last nail in the coffin for the 1-4 Seahawks, who are in their final year with Mike Holmgren as head coach.

Holmgren said on Monday that Hasselbeck will miss at least one more week due to a bulging disc in his back that is causing problems with his sore knee. Hasselbeck missed most of the preseason due to an ailing back.

"I'm a little bit hesitant to characterize the pain," said Holmgren. "I think it's creating a weakness in his leg more than pain. I think that's what's preventing him from playing. As soon as we can get that strength back in there...that's tied in more with his back than his knee right now."

This is the second time this season that Holmgren has had to deal with a shortage at one position. Early this year, Seattle was signing people off the streets to play the wideout spot, with Deion Branch, Logan Payne, Nate Burleson, Ben Obomanu and Bobby Engram all suffering injuries this year.

Payne, Burleson and Obomanu are all on injured reserve.

UP NEXT: Seattle plays the first of two straight road games this weekend, when the club heads to Tampa Bay. The Seahawks are 7-1 all-time versus the Buccaneers and have won the last three meetings.
