Sixth-seeded German Nicolas Kiefer moved on, while fifth-seeded Italian Andreas Seppi came up a first-round loser Tuesday at the clay-court Swiss Open.

The former top-10 star Kiefer drilled Italian qualifier Gianluca Naso 6-3, 6-2, while Seppi succumbed to German qualifier Dominik Meffert 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 at Roy Emerson Arena. Seppi was last year's Gstaad runner-up to Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu.

In other opening-round action, Stephane Bohli topped fellow Swiss wild card Robin Roshardt 6-2, 4-6, 6-4; Romanian Victor Hanescu humbled Frenchman Olivier Patience 7-6 (7-4), 6-2; French qualifier Jeremy Chardy outlasted Peruvian Luis Horna 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (6-8), 7-5; and Italian Flavio Cipolla overcame Czech Jiri Vanek 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

On Wednesday, top-seeded Swiss favorite Stanislas Wawrinka will take on Bohli and a second-seeded Mathieu will encounter Croat Marin Cilic in some second- round play.

The 2008 Gstaad titlist will collect $102.000.
