Diver sentenced for pearl theft

The Associated Press

A salvage diver accused of stealing pearls from a South Florida shipwreck has been sentenced to a year of probation and community service.

Michael T. Dodd pleaded guilty Friday. Authorities believe in June 2007, Dodd took about 21 pearls from a box found in the wreckage of the Santa Margarita, which was being salvaged by Mel Fisher's Treasures, LLC.

According to a news release, Dodd - who was an employee of the company - told investigators he planned to give the pearls to his girlfriend.

It was not immediately known who represented Dodd in court.
