Miami tops UNC, claims title in Cooper City Optimist basketball

WALL
The Weston Area Little League (11-12-year-old) National League all-star baseball team won the District 21 All-Star Tournament.
WALL National defeated Southside 10-0. Troy Foreman, Carlos Casadevall, Thomas Mosca and Donovan Weathers combined on a no-hitter. Mosca also doubled twice, and Michael Gillman had two hits and three RBI. Diego Maceda, Chris Malahias and Foreman each had two hits. Nicky Capella drove in the final run.
WALL National then came from behind to edge Plantation American 10-9. Trailing 9-5 in the last inning, WALL scored five times on hits by David Palazzolo, Foreman, Gillman and Mosca, who drove in the winning run. Palazzolo had a single and a triple, and Gillman delivered three hits. Mosca also stopped Plantation.
WALL National followed with a 10-0 win over WALL American. Palazzolo and Casadevall combined on a no-hitter with five strikeouts. Mosca had two hits to lead the offense.
WALL National continued to score and won the title by beating Federal 12-0. Gillman led the offense with a home run over the centerfield fence. Troy Worbington allowed no hits and struck out five. Steven Ghitis closed the game.
Worbington also had two hits, including a triple. Palazzolo tripled and doubled. Ronnie Kalasunas, Foreman, Gillman and Malahias had two hits apiece. Ghitis also had a hit. Jake Hochberg, Tyler Vina, Worbington, Weathers, Maceda and Casadevall played well on defense.
PEMBROKE PINES
The Pembroke Pines Optimist Bengals 8-and-under baseball team won the USSSA Kendall Craze VII Tournament in Homestead.
The Bengals beat All Sports Academy 9-4 in the finals. Starter Kevin Barreneche allowed two runs and struck out two in three innings. He also went 1 for 1 with three walks and scored three times.
Anthony Nunez was 2 for 2, scored twice and did an outstanding job at catcher. Luis Tuero went 2 for 3, scored twice, drove in three and was stellar at shortstop. Idair Garcia had a double, a run and an RBI.
Edgar Quintana finished the final three innings allowing one run. Quintana also had a double with two RBI. Jordan Naranjo scored. Ivan Herrera, Johnny Rodriguez, Christian Vargas and Jaylen Camacho were solid on defense.
In their past four tournaments, the Bengals won three.
he Pembroke Pines Optimist Bengals 12-and-under baseball team won the Cal Ripken Tidal Wave Tournament in South Carolina.
The weeklong tournament started with some team challenges that included a Turn 2 Challenge and Home Run Derby. The Bengals missed first place in the Turn 2 Challenge by only a three-hundredth of a second, a quick infield led by Ethan Cypress. In the Home Run Derby, Jawuan Harris hit seven home runs over the fence.
The Bengals beat the NYO Titans from Atlanta. Walter Jackson had a two-run double and made a diving stop at first base. Devin Moronta pitched the winning out.
In the championship game, the Bengals beat the WHC Renegades of Maryland 6-3. Ethan Cypress was named the MVP, producing multiple hits and RBI.
Other outstanding players included Dwayne Smith, Tyler Sabine, Jawuan Harris, Edwin Pichardo, Newton Vargas, Alec Kushner, Walter Jackson, Tre Donastorg, Devin Moronta, Rocco Marucci and Chris Lugo. They were coached by Walter Jackson, Maurice Harris, Tony Donastorg, team manager Meredith Morris and team mom April Bourassa.
