Marathon has talent to compete this fall

BY LARRY BLUSTEINlblustein@MiamiHerald.com

There was a time when you spoke of the Florida Keys, and it would be Key West High that would pop up with some of the impressive athletes the Conchs produced on the football field.

But these days a trip to see Monroe County football will take you to Marathon.

Over the past six seasons, Lance Martin has been trying to find the right combination to keep his Dolphins in the mix for the playoffs, and along the way, some quality football talent would emerge.

At a time when the playoffs are a priority, the Dolphins have the athletes to improve on last year's 7-4 mark. Athletes, present and future, such as Class of 2010 defensive end Thomas Ryan, a 6-4, 230-pounder, who is already getting offers from top-notch schools.

In addition to Ryan, the Dolphins boast quarterback Nyran Ross (5-9, 155), tight end/defensive lineman Travis Leachman (6-4, 220), two-way lineman John Porter (6-3, 232) and running back A.J. Freeman (5-8, 145) as rising juniors.

The Class of 2009 is also in great hands with defensive back/quarterback Kenny White leading the way. A year ago, White accounted for 800 yards and six touchdowns on offense, and his 27 tackles and four interceptions made a lasting impression on the defensive side of the ball. White has written offers from Western Michigan and Troy State.

Other seniors expected to make an impact include two-way lineman David Huntt (6-2, 238), who not only gets it done on the football field, but also in the classroom, where schools such as Penn and Davidson have been watching.

Other Class of 2009 prospects are defensive back Hector Vicosio, wide receiver/defensive back Angelo Hidalgo (5-11, 150) and offensive lineman/linebacker Justin Larson (5-10, 210).
