Club honors football stars

Northwestern's Jacory Harris, Booker T. Washington's Brandon Harris, Monsignor Pace's Greg Shaw and Dade Christian's Shawn Abuhoff were honored Monday by the South Florida Touchdown Club at a ceremony at the Miami Springs Country Club.

The organization also honored Northwestern coach Billy Rolle, former Booker T. Washington coach Tim Harris Sr., and retiring Carol City coach Walt Frazier.

Jacory Harris earned the club's Class 6A-4A Offensive Player of the Year award. Harris, who already is enrolled at the University of Miami, broke several Dade passing records, including most touchdown passes for a season (49) and for a career (92).

Harris also was named ''Mr. Florida Football,'' the annual award given to the top high school player in the state by the Florida Dairy Farmers Association.

''I'm honored by this, and I hope it's a beginning, not an ending, as we all hope to become better football players and young men,'' Harris said.

Brandon Harris, who was named the Gatorade State Player of the Year and guided the Tornadoes to their first state championship since the school reopened, received the 6A-4A Defensive Player of the Year award.

Harris, who also is headed to UM, had 23 touchdowns and nine interceptions while playing both offense and defense the past two seasons.

Shaw, who is headed to Louisiana State, was named the Class 3A-1A Offensive Player of the Year. Shaw was rated among the top 25 linemen in the nation.

Abuhoff, who guided the Crusaders to a state semifinal during his junior year and a regional finals berth this past season, won the 3A-1A Defensive Player of the Year award. Abuhoff, also a track standout, will attend Dartmouth College.

Rolle and Harris were chosen as recipients of the Joe Brodsky Coach of the Year award. The award is given in honor of the legendary former HialeahMiami Lakes coach, who guided the Trojans to a state championship in 1975.

Rolle led the Bulls to their second consecutive 15-0 season and the nation's No. 1 ranking.

Harris led the Tornadoes to their first state title and a 57-7 record in five years. He recently accepted a non-coaching position at UM.

Frazier was presented with a lifetime-achievement award in honor of his 26 years coaching football at Hialeah-Miami Lakes and Carol City. He led the Chiefs to three state championships and is only the third Dade coach to surpass the 200-victory mark.
