Stinson commits to FSU
South Dade junior defensive end Ed Stinson has made an oral commitment to Florida State University.
Stinson (6-5, 234 pounds) is rated the No. 5 defensive end in Florida and a four-star recruit by Rivals.com. He has offers from the University of Miami, South Florida, Florida International, Auburn and Kansas.
Stinson, a two-sport star, had 15 sacks and 60 tackles in his first season playing football last year. He led the Bucs to the Class 6A regional final. He also led the South Dade boys' basketball team to the Class 6A regional semifinals, averaging 17 points and 15 rebounds a game.
''The chance to play both football and basketball are big reasons he's chosen the Seminoles,'' South Dade basketball coach John Herron said.
Stinson is the second Miami-Dade defensive end of the Class of 2009 to commit early to a state school, joining American's Olivier Vernon (UM). He is FSU's eighth early commitment, and the second defensive end. Tallahassee Florida High's Brandon Jenkins is the other.
South Miami senior linebacker Drayquan Crawford signed with Kilgore College in Texas on Wednesday, according to Cobras coach Eric Washington. Crawford had 92 tackles and two sacks last season.
BAUR RESIGNS
Columbus soccer coach Hart Baur has stepped down after 20 seasons. Baur led the Explorers to an average of 14 victories during his career and made three trips to the regional playoffs.
''I'm glad I got the chance to contribute to building a strong, disciplined program,'' Baur said. ``I feel like this is the right time for me to step down.''
Baur, a graduate of Palmer High School, played college soccer at the William & Mary. This season, the Explorers lost in the District 15-6A playoffs and sustained numerous injuries to key starters.
Baur said he would not rule out coming back to coach another team.
''If I good offer came my way, I'd consider it,'' Baur said. ``I feel bad that circumstances hurt us from keeping the season going longer. But I had lots of fun coaching a lot of great kids all those years.''
GIL SIGNS
Palmer Trinity point guard Cristina Gil has signed a letter-of-intent with Suffolk University in Boston.
Gil is coming off a senior season where she reached 1,000 points, and is the program's first collegiate signee.
ACADEMIC STARS
Palmer Trinity's Joseph Masterman and Miami Country Day's Brian Riemer were named to the Florida High School Athletic Association's Academic All-State team.
Masterman has a 3.99 grade-point average and is the valedictorian in a senior class of 87 students at Palmer. Masterman, a lacrosse and football player for the Falcons, will go to Yale.
Riemer, who played lacrosse, football and basketball during his career at Miami Country Day, has a 4.0 grade-point average.
