Krop, Gables make final
Krop's Alec Krantz had played only one service game Tuesday afternoon and already his tennis racket was stained with blood.
Krantz had popped three blisters on his right hand that had nearly prevented him from competing in the Lightning's GMAC semifinal match against Palmetto in the first place.
''Every time I hit the ball, it hurt,'' Krantz said. ``I had to get it taped up. I knew I had to keep going because my team needed me to come through with a win.''
Krantz endured the pain and secured one of the key match wins 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 singles that led the Krop boys to a 4-1 team win against the Panthers at Tropical Park. The Lightning will play Coral Gables, which swept Hialeah 5-0, at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the boys' final at Tropical Park.
The Krop girls came away with a convincing 6-1 victory against Coral Reef in the semifinals. The Lightning girls will play Varela, which beat Hialeah 6-1, in the final at 2:30 p.m.
Krop, the defending Class 4A boys and girls state champions, will each attempt to win their third consecutive GMAC titles.
Krop coach Mike Kypriss said he was ''pleasantly surprised'' his boys' team clinched the match without having to play the doubles round.
''This is one of the biggest GMAC victories we've ever had because Palmetto has a huge amount of talent,'' Kypriss said. ``I thought we'd have to go the distance. This was a great win against a great team.''
The win began with the Lightning's No. 1 singles' player Billy Federhofer beating Palmetto's Luke Mojica 6-3, 6-3. Gino Ramirez then picked up a pivotal 6-2, 6-2 win against Oscar Peña at No. 2. Peña had beaten Ramirez last season.
Krantz's courageous win at No. 5 gave Krop a 3-1 lead following Palmetto's lone victory at No. 3 when Jon Yaramaglu beat Antonio Zarur, 6-4, 6-1. Leonardo Torralles clinched the match by outlasting Matt Levine in a three-set win, 7-6, 0-6, 6-4.
Coral Reef's girls' No. 1, Nakita Austin, started the Barracudas off strong by beating Krop's Taylor Dubins 6-3, 6-4. But the Lightning's Brittany Dubins, Akeemi Maehama, Sonja Latycheva and Brittany Henry swept the remaining singles' matches to secure the win.
''The girls have a chance to do something special this season,'' Kypriss said. ``I think there's a certain toughness and confidence among them that they show whenever they're playing in an important match.''
