Northwestern wins girls' track

The three-time defending state champion Northwestern girls' track and field team won the team title of the Elite Classic at Winter Park High School this past weekend. The Bulls finished with 152 points ahead of runner-up Orlando Oak Ridge, which had 124.

The Bulls boys' squad finished second with 89 points, behind meet-champion Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas' 97.

Skyler Wallen set a meet record in the 800 meters with a time of 2:14.34 and helped the Bulls win the 3,200-meter relay in 9:36.66 in meet record time. Northwestern's girls also won the 1,600 meter relay in 3:55.73. Sandy Jean won the high jump (5-1) and Naquia Williams won the triple jump (35-9 ½).

Northwestern's boys won both the varsity and freshmen/sophomore 1,600 meter relays. Roy Smith took home the 110 hurdles title, winning in 15.11 seconds, and the Bulls won the 400 relay in 44.61.

NOTEBOOK

• Southridge swept the team titles of the Lake Mary track and field Invitational Saturday. Brandon O'Connor and Eric Adeyemi each won a pair of events to lead the Spartans' boys, who held off a strong challenge by runner-up Carol City 101-95. On the girls' side, Ebony Eutsey won the 200 and 400 meters as Southridge finished 55 points ahead of runners-up Lake Mary and Tampa Wharton.

• Miami Beach's Andrew Bass and Alexander Madden finished first and second in the pole vault at the Disney World Invitational at Lake Buena Vista Saturday. Both vaulted 12-6, and Bass won the event title with the tiebreaker.

• Miami Springs senior midfielder Holly Bain signed with Barry University last week. Bain had 24 goals and 35 assists to lead the Golden Hawks to the girls' soccer state final four for the first time in 20 years.
