Goleman rallies to beat Miami High

By ANDRE C. FERNANDEZ a1fernandez@MiamiHerald.com

Goleman baseball coach Manny Yanez was preparing what he calls his ''defeat speech'' during the top of the seventh inning Thursday night.

Lucky for Yanez, he didn't have to use it on his team.

The Gators rallied from a 4-2 deficit by scoring six runs in the final frame to beat Miami High 8-6 at Curtis Park.

Goleman has spared its coach the need for consolation most of the season so far.

''We weren't hitting the ball or playing particularly well so I was getting ready to talk about how to deal with the loss,'' Yanez said. ``Then they go out and do something like that. We're a mostly young team, so it's great to see them come back like that.''

The Gators (13-1), ranked No. 8 in The Miami Herald's South Florida Top 10 poll, are off to the best start by any large school on the north end of Miami-Dade County this year. With the victory Goleman avenged its only loss of the season, a 10-3 defeat against the Stingarees (10-4) the second week of the regular season at a tournament in Miami Beach.

The Gators lead District 13-6A, and have already swept the regular season series against Krop, which began the season ranked ahead of them in the district.

''It's still early and there are a lot of good teams we'll still have to face,'' Yanez said. ``The good thing is that this team is playing with the same intensity no matter who the opponent.''

Goleman loaded the bases with no outs to start the seventh. Shortstop Andy Ruiz lifted a fly ball that the wind carried away from Stingarees center fielder Enrique Perez's glove and dropped in for a single.

Gators' third baseman Frank Solis, who had gone 0 for 2 before the seventh, delivered the go-ahead hit with a single up the middle that scored Danny Fraga and Ryan Verdecia to put the Gators ahead 5-4. Goleman added three more, capped by Jason Bonilla's two-run single.

Jerralld Mejia, who entered the game in relief in the sixth inning, ran into some trouble in the bottom half of the inning as Miami High loaded the bases with no outs. Stingarees right fielder Andres Martinez, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 8-5. But Mejia struck out the next batter and only gave up one more run on a pair of ground outs to end the game.

The Gators sent 10 hitters to the plate during the top of the seventh and seven hitters in their lineup had at least one hit.

Miami High had erased an early 2-0 deficit with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Third baseman Yasmany Mosquera, who went 2 for 3, tripled to left center field the next inning, and scored two batters later on a single by Martinez to give the Stingarees a 3-2 lead. Mosquera drove in another run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double.

''We know this was a non-district game, but we tried to stress the importance a game like this has in the long run,'' Yanez said. ``This is one of the teams we could end up facing again down the road.''

TENNIS STATE FINALS

The Florida High School Athletic Association announced that its inaugural state lacrosse finals will be held at West Orange High in Winter Garden, April 18-19. Four teams in the boys and girls classes will advance to the tournament.

The FHSAA has also centralized its state tennis finals, which had been spread out in three areas for the past six years. The Class 2A and 1A state tennis tournaments will move to Red Bug Lake and Sylvan Lake Parks in Seminole County this year. The Class 2A meet had been held in Tampa and the 1A meet in Tallahassee.

The Class 4A and 3A state tournaments will be held at parks in nearby Altamonte Springs. The Class 4A and 2A meets will be held April 21-23, with the Class 3A and 1A tournaments to be held from April 23-25.
