Grossman powers Gulliver girls; Doral wins

By ANDRE C. FERNANDEZ a1fernandez@MiamiHerald.com

When Gulliver softball coach Mark Schusterman tells people there's a youth movement on his team, he isn't exaggerating.

On Wednesday night, the Raiders' starting outfield was made up of eighth-graders.

One of them, center fielder Dominique Grossman delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the sixth inning that helped Gulliver secure a 2-0 win against Palmetto at Palmetto Bay Park.

With the bases loaded and two out, Grossman connected on a fastball from Panthers' ace Kelly Saco with a 1-2 count and lifted it into the gap in left center field. The ball rolled all the way to the fence, allowing Brittany Garabedian and Olivia Alvarez to score.

Saco struck out 10 and pitched a complete game, but ran into trouble in the sixth after hitting Garabedian with a pitch and a fielding error by second baseman Courtney Ray. Sophomore Sara Buchholz followed that up with an infield single to load the bases and set up Grossman's double.

''Those girls might be young, but they have the talent to be special players,'' Schusterman said. ``[Grossman] showed a lot of athleticism in the outfield tonight.''

Buchholz (9-1) was solid once again for Gulliver, striking out 11 in a two-hitter. Buchholz struck out seven of the first nine batters she faced and did not allow a hit until Tiffany Mullins-Diaz singled in the top of the fifth.

The Raiders (12-2), who have advanced to state the past two seasons, are coming off their second consecutive tournament championship of the annual Baptist Health South Florida SlamFest. Gulliver will travel to a tournament in California next week, and then compete in the prestigious Kissimmee Klassic during spring break the following week.

BOYS' WATER POLO

• Gulliver 11, Belen 9: Belen was supposed to have its best team in years, but it wasn't enough to beat the defending state champion, as Gulliver Prep defeated the Wolverines again 11-9 at Miami-Dade Kendall.

With the game tied at nine with 46 seconds to play, Gulliver's German Olano scored following the exclusion of Belen's Gaspar Barreto giving the Raiders the lead. Belen had one last chance, but with 30 seconds left, Jake Bakas' shot went over the top cross bar. The final margin came when Gulliver goalie Craig Merlin found the back of the net with one second left.

''There was no doubt I was going to shoot that,'' Merlin said. ``Pretty much I played how I know how to play. I gave everything I had. We beat them last year by a goal in overtime in the regional finals. We wanted to defend that win. We lost to Winter Park and Belen beat them. We couldn't lose to Belen. We just gave it everything we got.''

For the first 10 minutes of the game, it looked like Belen (13-3) might roll to a win as they built a 7-4 lead behind four goals from Bakas, but Merlin stoned the Wolverines from the 4:10 mark of the second to the 3:15 mark of the fourth, a span of over 14 minutes as Gulliver took clawed its way back into the game and then took the lead.

Down 7-4, Gulliver (11-1) got goals from Olano, Jose Mujica and Lars Nordt to tie the game at seven going into halftime.
