Miami-Dade teams dominate track event
Miami-Dade County athletes dominated the prestigious Bob Hayes Track and Field Invitational in Jacksonville this weekend -- a meet that featured more than 75 of the state's top schools.
Although no team title was awarded, six individual event records were broken by Southridge athletes, and three-time defending Class 4A girls' state champion Northwestern set a meet record in the 3,200-meter relay -- the event it broke a state record in last season when it won its third consecutive state title.
The Bulls' squad of Skyler Wallen, Brianna Streeter, Brittany Pringley and Keisha Richburg ran a 9:16.84. Wallen led Northwestern individually with victories in the 800 (2:16.28) and the 1,600 (5:15.60).
Southridge's Ebony Eutsey set records in the 200 meters in 23.67 seconds, and in the 400 meters with a time of 54.99. Eutsey, Marcia Williams, Jennifer Estime and Ywkema Jackson led Southridge to a 1,600-meter relay win in 3:51.16.
Also for the Spartans, Zakeya Stinson, a two-time state champion in the shot put and discus, won both events and set a record in the shot put with a throw of 49-7 ½ feet. Monique Gracia won the 100 hurdles in 14.30.
For the Southridge boys, Brandon O'Connor eclipsed his best times from last season in the 200 meters with a winning time of 20.63. O'Connor also broke the meet record in the 400 with a time of 46.50. Senior Eric Adeyemi won both hurdles events and set a record in the 300 hurdles with a time of 36.85.
Other winners included Booker T. Washington's Benedick Hyppolite, who won the 800 meters in 2:00.76.
Northwestern's 1,600 meter relay team of Tommy Streeter, Corvin Lamb, Michaelee Harris, Hugh Graham, Jr. edged Booker T. Washington with a time of 3:24.51. Defending Class 2A state champion Belen, led by Guillermo Echarte, Gabriel Loret-De Mola, Larry Duran and Robert Aran, won the 3,200-meter relay in 8:11.95.
