Ben Aarestad was trying to call a play for his defense last spring when a persistent tap on the shoulder from a college recruiter got on his nerves.
Thirty-five of South Florida's best senior-to-be high school baseball players met at Barry University's Feinbloom Stadium in Miami Shores on Thursday afternoon to take some batting practice, field a few fly balls and grounders, and take part in a short scrimmage, all courtesy of Major League Baseball.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD WINNERS
Before Tuesday's All-Dade Awards Breakfast at Miami's Jungle Island, longtime Southridge girls' track coach Sam Burley joked that the only thing left for him to do before retiring this summer was to take one last bow on stage.
ALL-DADE AWARDS CEREMONY
Athletes from more than 50 schools were represented Tuesday at the All-Dade Awards Ceremony at Jungle Island. Presented by BankUnited and also sponsored by the Miami Museum of Science, the event honored the county's elite athletes for their excellence on the court and on the field.
HIGH SCHOOLS
Miami-Dade County teams won 18 state championships and two mythical national titles in one of the most memorable seasons in recent history.

LOCAL ROUNDUP
Miami Varela senior Luiz Yamashita has been named the Florida Dairy Farmers Boys' Soccer State Player of the Year. Yamashita scored 28 goals this past season to lead the Vipers to their second consecutive state championship. Varela was voted the No. 1 team in the country after the season by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
When Steve Davis won the state championship at Blanche Ely in 2002, his cellphone never seemed to stopped ringing. He's having the same problem with Plantation High this season. For more on the Colonels, American Heritage and South Broward check out this edition of my spring tour.

Miami-Dade County athletes spent most of the 2007-2008 high school year in the national spotlight. Northwestern won a mythical national championship, and, along with Booker T. Washington, showed the country how good Dade football is with nationally televised victories in Texas and South Carolina.

Plantation American Heritage senior soccer defender Shawn Barry and former Southwest softball pitcher Missy Penna each earned national honors this week.
CLASS 1A BASEBALL SEMIFINALS
Brito knew it would have to play near-flawless baseball to upset defending Class 1A state champion Jacksonville Eagle's View -- a team motivated to avenge a loss to Brito in the 2006 state championship.
SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARDS
More than 75 students were awarded scholarships and grants totaling more than $50,000 Monday at Miami-Dade County Schools' annual scholar-athlete luncheon. Legendary Coral City football coach Walter Frazier also was honored at the event, held at the Miami Airport Hilton, with the county's Coach of the Year award.
STATE BASEBALL
The Brito baseball team is back in familiar territory, making the eighth appearance in the state final in school history. But this season marks one of the few times the Panthers are there as an underdog.

It was near-unanimous: After years pushing to change the state's regional playoff format, Florida's high school baseball coaches got what they wanted -- a best-of-3 series, with a doubleheader on Friday and an if-necessary game on Saturday.

Fans of the Goleman baseball team will treasure the memories of an historic 2008 season. The Gators, however, will try to forget the final chapter.
