What a way to stop a cold streak.
The Flanagan baseball team, which had struggled its way to a 7-5 record, got a resounding 7-0 home win against previously undefeated Taravella on Wednesday.
Resounding, especially because pitcher Corey Witkowski threw a no-hitter and walked none. He was just two Falcons errors from a perfect game.
''Corey was just phenomenal,'' assistant coach Joe Chacko said, comparing him to older brother and former Flanagan star Glenn Witkowski, now a sophomore at Jacksonville. ``He's been Glenn without Glenn being here.''
The younger Witkowski struck out 12 in seven innings, allowing the Falcons hitters to go to work. They gave him more run support than he needed.
Ali Sanchez went 4 for 4 with two doubles, three runs and four RBI. Rolando Gomez went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three runs.
The win pushed Flanagan to 8-5 and dropped Taravella to 12-1.
''Hopefully this is a win that'll put us over the hump,'' Chacko said.
