Dade All-Stars top Palm Beach

Trailing 62-56, the Miami-Dade All Stars went on a 10-0 run in the second half en route to a 95-80 victory over the Palm Beach All-Stars at Palm Beach Lakes High School Saturday night.

Norland's Antonio Hester led Miami-Dade with 18 points and won the slam dunk contest for the second straight week when he jumped over two people to defeat Santaluces' Addison Smith.

''I never jumped over anyone like that,'' Hester said of winning the dunk contest. ``It felt good winning back to back weeks. It felt like another go at a state championship twice.''

Down six, Coral Gables' Michael Conward hit a three, followed by baskets by Carol City's Antonio Valiente and Norland's Amir Celestin before Valiente hit a three from the corner capping the run.

The Palm Beach All-Stars cut the lead to 68-67, but Miami-Dade then went on a 15-3 run pushing the lead to a commanding 83-70 in the final minutes of the game.

Miami Springs' T.Y. Hilton, Carol City's Kendall Despagne and Hester hit six free throws in a row followed by a three-pointer by Celestin. Miami High's Lazarius Johnson hit a pair of free throws before Despagne and Norland's Jerry Jones hit layups for the 13-point lead.

''We came out hard. Last time at Dillard, we came out sloppy, they jumped on us,'' Hester said. ``We were kind of slow on defense. Offense we were moving the ball a lot.''

Hilton added 17 points for Miami-Dade and Valiente had 14 to help pace Miami-Dade.

• North All-Stars 104, Private School All-Stars 103: South Florida's top boys' private school prospects showcased their skills and creativity Saturday as the North All-Stars won the 22nd Annual Private School All-Star game 104-103 in overtime at LaSalle High School.

The teams, broken up geographically into North and South, competed in one of the most competitive games in the history of the prep showcase.

Miami Christian's Felipe Vargas took home most valuable player honors for the North squad as he scored eight of his 12 points in the second half. While LaSalle's Steven Miro's 17 points and three assists earned him MVP of the South team.

During the halftime intermission, players competed in three point shooting competitions and a dunk contest.

LaSalle's Glen Rodriguez took home the dunk contest crown, defeating Pace's Ray Shipman. Rodriguez won the competition by catching a bounce pass and jumping over LaSalle's Dayshalee Salaman for a two-handed slam.

Miami Christian's Davin Pace shot his way to the three point title, defeating Belen's Jonathan Fernandez.

Also receiving awards were Monsignor Pace coach Marc Lieberman as boy's coach of the year and Miami Country Day's Ochiel Swaby as girl's coach of the year.

Shipman was also named the boy's player of the year and Salaman was named the girl's player of the year.

After trailing 48-39 at halftime, the South All-Stars received a big lift from the newly crowned the slam dunk king Rodriguez as he opened the second half with a slam which sparked a 14-5 run.

The game then turned into highlight show as players began showcasing their ball handling and shooting touch. The most exciting play of the night came from Choice Academy's Freddie Torres.

Torres charged down the court on a fast break, faked a behind the back pass to himself, sending one defender to the floor and then laid the ball in, sending the crowd into frenzy. Torres finished with 11 points and three assists.

The game tightened up late and the North held onto a slim 90-89 lead with less than a minute remaining. Archbishop Curley's Ronald Gaudin hit two free throws to put the North up 92-89 with 23 seconds remaining.

After hitting one free throw, the South was able to tie the game when Rodriguez was able to rebound a missed free throw and put it back in while being fouled. Rodriguez missed the go ahead free throw.

Northwest Christian's Terrell Terry was able to seal the North's victory as he scored the game winning points with 28 seconds to play.
