St. Thomas' Goldenberg, Posnack's Braun honored

St. Thomas Aquinas water polo star Elina Goldenberg and Posnack athlete Solomon Braun were named to the 14th Annual Florida High School Athletic Association's Academic All-State team this week.

Goldenberg has a 3.82 grade-point average and ranks in the top 5 percent of her class. Goldenberg, who will study prelaw and business at Maryland, lettered in swimming and water polo in each of her four years at Aquinas.

Braun has a 4.0 grade-point average, which is first in his class. Braun earned 11 letters -- four in cross-country, four in soccer, two in baseball and one in basketball. He is undecided between Princeton and Harvard.

Each of the 24 members of the team will receive a $1,000 award. The overall Boys' and Girls' Scholar Athletes, which will be revealed during the 14th Annual FHSAA Academic All-State Awards Banquet on June 12 at the One Ocean Resort in Atlantic Beach, will receive an additional $3,000.

CHARITY GOLF EVENT

Stranahan will hold the Second Annual Lee Williams Celebrity Golf Tournament on May 10 at the Orangebrook Country Club in Hollywood.

Proceeds will benefit the Dragons' football team and go toward athletic support and equipment. Tee time for the event is 1 p.m.

Interested participants should call 754-323-2100 and ask for football coach Joe Redmond or athletic director Jennifer Hamilton.

Thirteen players from Stranahan signed scholarships after the 2007 season.

MEMORIAL TO BE HELD

Chaminade-Madonna will hold a memorial service for former athletic director Jim Moses on May 3 in the school's chapel.

The afternoon service will begin at 6.
