Deerfield Beach's Robinson, Coconut Creek's Pressley dominate

It was a night to remember for Deerfield Beach's Denard Robinson and Coconut Creek's Maya Pressley at the Region 3-4A track-and-field championships.

Robinson won the 200 meters in a photo finish over South Broward's Andre Thomas to cap a sweep of the 100 and 200 and 400 relay at Dillard on Thursday.

In the 200, Robinson made his move with 30 meters left and outleaned Thomas at the finish line. Robinson finished in 22.28 seconds, with Thomas at 22.32.

''The 200 came down to the wire,'' said Robinson, one of the state's top quarterbacks. ``I thought he got me, but I leaned forward and won. I didn't even know I won it.''

Robinson and Blanche Ely's Patrick Johnson provide a dramatic finish running the anchor legs in the 400 relay. Johnson made a late charge but Robinson held on to bring the Bucks home in 41.73. Ely finished in 41.81, and was followed by Boyd Anderson (41.97) and Flanagan (42.21).

''This was my third time running him in the 4-by-100,'' Johnson said. ``He is a very competitive guy. I take my hat off to him. We go back and forth every week. It was just a battle.''

Although Robinson was dominating the sprints, Pressley was putting on a show of her own, winning the high jump and 300 hurdles, and finishing fourth in the long jump and 100 hurdles.

''To qualify for four events at states the first time in my life feels great,'' Pressley said. ``It's my junior year. I am going to get it at states too.''

Joining Pressley as a four-event qualifier was Plantation's Jeanette Hulse, who qualified in the triple jump, long jump and 400, and the 1,600 relay.

The top four finishers in each event qualified for the state championships in Winter Park on May 3.

McArthur's Ramoye Simoye also will be headed to state after pulling an upset in the 110 high hurdles and returning to finish fourth in the 300 hurdles. Simoye, who won the 110 hurdles in 14.62, said the extra work he put in his start the past two weeks was the difference.

''I wasn't expected to win,'' Simoye said. ``My coach said I needed to put the cockiness back in me and get the job done so I can get to states.''

Boyd Anderson was led by senior sprinter Sheila Paul, who won the 100, finished second in the 200 and ran the anchor leg on the winning 400 relay team. Boyd Anderson totaled 118 points to win its second consecutive girls' regional title.

''I got a really good start in the 100,'' Paul said. ``I got out and drove, which is the key to winning. I feel really good right now.''

The Flanagan boys' team placed second -- the highest finish in its history -- behind Sebastian Castillo, who cruised to the 1,600 and 3,200 titles.

Cypress Bay's Emilie Amaro won the 1,600 and finished second to Wellington's Ashley Brasovan in the 3,200.

''I am just having fun,'' said Amaro, who will run for Stanford. ``It would be nice to defend it [the 1,600 title].''
