Hess, Sears, Sheffield power Westminster Academy

BY FABIAN LYON flyon@MiamiHerald.com

No matter how many rain delays caused the Westminster Academy Invitational to run late Friday, Westminster Academy's Teddy Hess, Wayne Sears and Anthony Sheffield weren't going to allow another team to leave the Hill Family Track Complex with the boys' trophy.

Hess won the 200 meters, finished second in the 400, ran anchor leg on the Lions' 1,600-meter relay third-place team, and Sheffield won the triple jump, finished second in the high jump and ran anchor leg on the winning 400-meter relay team to lead Westminster to the boys' title.

Sears won the high jump, finished third in the triple jump and ran on the Lions' 1,600-meter relay team.

The meet, which was delayed by inclement weather, wrapped up after midnight.

Pine Crest junior Chris Baker dominated the boys distance events, sweeping the 1,600 meters and 3,200, and Archbishop McCarthy's Gus Vasquez-Milan pulled off a 100-400 double to highlight the sprints.

The Mavericks girls placed second overall behind a pair of victories by 10th-graders Brooke Owen (high jump) Alessandra (pole vault). Courthey Brant placed second in the triple jump (31-7.5).
