Is this BA's year?
Warranted or not, critics claim the Boyd Anderson boys' basketball teams of the past four seasons played like Superman during the regular season only to turn into Clark Kent when the state playoffs rolled around.
This might finally be the season Boyd Anderson remembers to keep its cape on.
Boyd Anderson (29-1), ranked No. 20 in the National Prep Basketball Poll and No. 1 in Class 6A, plays Orlando Evans (24-7) in the Florida High School Athletic Association's state semifinals at the Lakeland Center Thursday.
A victory would extend the Cobras' Florida-best streak to 26 and send them to the 6A Championship game Saturday night against either Miami Norland (24-6) or Winter Springs (27-3).
''This is our year,'' said Cobras 6-7 senior center Ivan Aska, who averages a team-high 15 points and 13 rebounds. ``Over the past years, we had little issues. We still have them but we solve them by talking to each other. Other years we didn't talk to each other and didn't have a bond like we do now.''
This marks the Cobras' first trip to the State Final Four since veteran coach Michael Benanti led them to the 5A title in 1994.
Boyd Anderson promises a different ending than the previous four seasons, when built up expectations resulted in playoff heart break.
The Cobras' past four playoff losses have come by a combined 10 points. In 2004, they were upset by rival Blanche Ely in the regional quarterfinals. A year later, they fell to eventual state champion Norland 52-50. Perhaps the most painful loss during that stretch happened last season, when Ely beat them 67-66 in the Regional Final and went on to win the 6A title.
Junior guard Martavious Irving (13 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 3.5 apg) said the team has rallied around coach Eugene Richardson, who Irving believes has gotten undue criticism for their playoff shortcomings.
''We want to win this one for Coach Richardson,'' Irving said. ``There are a lot of doubters out there that feel that he is not a great coach if he does not win a state championship. He gets a lot of heat. I hear it from a lot of people. People measure your career by if you win a state championship so we need to go get this one for him.''
