Lineman Carey injured against Jaguars

Miami's offensive line had a scary moment early in Saturday's preseason opener against Jacksonville at Dolphin Stadium.

Vernon Carey, who was switched from right tackle to left tackle during the offseason, sustained an undisclosed right knee injury -- one not considered to be serious -- with 5:40 remaining in the first quarter.

Carey sustained the injury on a sweep by Ronnie Brown to the left in a two-tight end formation. Brown gained 6 yards on the carry.

Carey was helped off the field and was quickly examined. Moments after getting on a table, Carey stood up under his own power and headed to a stationary bike. Carey did not return to the game.

Julius Wilson, an undrafted free agent from Alabama-Birmingham, replaced Carey and played with the first unit the rest of the half. Wilson, center Samson Satele and left guard Drew Mormino comprised an all-rookie left side for the Dolphins.

STARTERS OUT

Three defensive starters sat out Saturday's preseason opener.

The Dolphins were without reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Jason Taylor, linebacker Zach Thomas and defensive tackle Keith Traylor.

Akbar Gbaja-Biamila replaced Taylor. Derrick Pope started in place of Thomas. Fourth-round pick Paul Soliai filled in for Traylor.

FINE UPCOMING?

Defensive tackle Vonnie Holliday might be fined for a helmet-to-helmet collision with Jaguars starting quarterback Byron Leftwich in the first quarter.

The hit, which occurred on third-and-20, resulted in a 15-yard penalty and an automatic first down. The Jaguars capitalized on the miscue and scored on a 1-yard pass from Leftwich to Dennis Northcutt in the second quarter.

• Linebacker Jim Maxwell (cramps) left the game in the third quarter.

WELCOME TO MIAMI

Fullback Cory Schlesinger spent his entire NFL career in Detroit before signing with the Dolphins as a free agent this offseason.

Schlesinger, about to begin his 13th season, has played a home game in Miami-Dade County before Friday night, however.

As a senior at Nebraska, Schlesinger led the Cornhuskers to a national championship by beating the Hurricanes in the 1995 Orange Bowl Classic. As Big 8 champs, Nebraska technically was the home team in that game. Schlesinger scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns in Nebraska's 24-17 victory.

Schlesinger picked up Miami's lone first down in the opening quarter on a fourth-down run from the 29.

• Actor Jimmy Smits was part of the pregame introductions, filming a scene for his new Miami-based drama.

• Miami mayor Manny Diaz was one of the game's honorary captains.

• Miami lineman Rex Hadnot started at right guard after previously being demoted behind Mormino through most of training camp.
