Miami Hurricanes wide receiver Thearon Collier to miss Duke game

sdegnan@MiamiHerald.com

Add another injury to the Miami Hurricanes' already lengthy list.

Wide receiver and punt-return specialist Thearon Collier sustained an ankle sprain Sunday during practice and was initially put in a cast to immobilize it, a source close to the situation said.

The cast has been removed and replaced with a walking boot. He will miss the game against Duke at noon Saturday at LandShark Stadium. His status for UM's final regular-season game at University of South Florida is uncertain and depends on how his ankle heals.

Collier, a 19-year-old sophomore, is the UM player who impressed the nation with his 60-yard punt return for a touchdown two weeks ago in UM's victory against Virginia. The play was No. 2 on ESPN SportsCenter's top-10 plays of the day.

He also returned a 61-yard punt for a touchdown against Florida A&M earlier this season.

Collier also has made some clutch catches as a slot receiver this season, including his 18-yard catch on third down to extend UM's winning drive at Wake Forest, where he came down with one foot in bounds.

A graduate of Miami Booker T. Washington High School, Collier has played in all 10 games, with 13 catches for 209 yards.

He has returned 11 punts for 152 yards and the two touchdowns.

Travis Benjamin and Graig Cooper are the other two UM players who have returned punts this season. Benjamin returned nine for 57 yards; Cooper, two for one yard.

Quarterback Jacory Harris, who injured a finger on his throwing hand last Saturday at North Carolina, took his usual snaps Wednesday, according to backup A.J. Highsmith. He was seen by reporters wearing a protective strap over his right thumb and index finger.

``He had no problems, did everything he was supposed to do,'' UM coach Randy Shannon said after practice.

Shannon said that safety Ray-Ray Armstrong (knee) and linebacker Sean Spence (knee) returned to practice Tuesday and could play against Duke.

``Two days they got in, so they should be ready to go,'' Shannon said. ``I don't know how much they'll play, but they'll play. . . . They should help out the defense if they get an opportunity to get into the game.''

When asked if there was any further injury news, Shannon said, ``That's it.''
