RECRUITING

Camps boost football prospects

lblustein@MiamiHerald.com

The D1 camp also attracted some athletic linebackers, such as John Diuerstil (Fort Lauderdale), Justin Birkenholz (Douglas), David and Daniel Lozandier (North Miami), Angel Porras (Ferguson), Nathaniel Berry (Doral Academy), David Holley (Ely) and South Dade sophomores Le Travian Crawford and Joey Jones, who is the younger brother of former Miami Hurricane Charlie Jones.

''This is the kind of camp that you take something back to the practice field with you,'' Birkenholz said. ``There is so much I learned in just three days.''

Receivers and quarterbacks also took center stage, with Dan Mervos (Cooper City), Dwellie Striggles (University School), Kevin Laing (North Miami), Arione Scott (Nova), Caylin McBeth (American) and West Broward tight end Mike Fratianni turning some heads in every session.

''These kids really surprised me,'' said Bryant College coach Joel Rodriguez, who was a standout at Monsignor Pace and the University of Miami. ``There was a lot of quality out here, which keeps everyone wanting to come back and keep recruiting this region of the state.''

Quarterbacks Nick Becker (Pine Crest), Turner Baty (St. Thomas Aquinas), Chase McCallum (Pompano) and Stephen Morris (Monsignor Pace) also were impressive.

Marlon Kelly (Dr. Krop), Evan Krivjanik (Northeast), Bryan Parnes (South Broward), Jovani McCray (South Dade), Abe Coleman (American), Sterlin Darling (Killian) and Doug Cook (University School), the younger brother of former UM linebacker Glenn Cook, also made a lasting impression.

This week, the D1 Camp for linemen is taking place, bringing in some of the area's top prospects.

KICKING CHAMPS

Drew Zloch (Cardinal Gibbons) and Derek Soven (Cypress Bay) won the Senior Field Goal and Punting competitions at the FAU Kicking Camp two weeks ago. Both are among the best in the state.

Don't forget that we always are looking to help expose our area recruits for the classes of 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. All you have to do is send a DVD and information about the athlete to: Larry Blustein, P.O. Box 3181, Hallandale Beach, FL, 33009.

Larry Blustein is co-host of the Miami Dolphins Gridiron Show every Thursday evening from 7-8 on WQAM (560 AM). Have a comment? E-mail lblustein@MiamiHer
