COVER STORY

How mobile can healthcare be?

jdorschner@MiamiHerald.com

While Washington bubbles with talk about making healthcare available to all Americans, many desperate patients don't have time to wait for reform. An ever-growing number of Americans, most of them uninsured, are seeking care abroad, while at the same time huge numbers of affluent foreigners are rushing to the United States for care.

For years, Miami has been booming as a major destination for healthcare, and experts say it's going to get bigger -- perhaps much bigger -- because many international patients now have insurance -- a marked contrast to five years ago, when almost none did.

The Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce has started a new marketing effort to lure patients -- a move that some healthcare experts say could improve care for people in South Florida as local facilities battle to compete worldwide.

What follow are several views of what's happening to the ever-changing world of global travel for healthcare.
