Defensive woes sink Miami FC

Another second-half defensive collapse sent Miami FC to a 3-1 loss against the Charleston Battery on Friday night in South Carolina.

It was the third straight loss for Miami FC.

Alex Afonso scored Miami's only goal, his fourth in six games.

Miami FC next plays Friday, hosting the Vancouver Whitecaps.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

• Central Florida: Senior Johnell Neal was injured during a shooting in his Louisiana hometown. Neal's condition wasn't immediately clear, and few details of the Thursday night shooting in Baton Rouge, La., were released.

A phone message left with Baton Rouge police was not immediately returned Friday.

UCF coach George O'Leary said in a statement that he has spoken with both Neal and the cornerback's mother.

Neal graduated from UCF last week with a degree in criminal justice, and he was expected to begin work on another bachelor's degree this summer.

TENNIS

• Barry women: The Bucs advanced to the finals of the Division II regional tournament with a 5-0 victory against visiting Saint Leo.

Barry (19-6) plays Rollins College on Saturday for the championship.

SOFTBALL

• Western Kentucky 7, FIU 1: Lindsay Antone hit a home run in the first inning, and the Hilltoppers went on to eliminate the Golden Panthers from the Sun Belt Conference tournament in Troy, Ala.

Kim Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning for FIU's only run. The Golden Panthers finished the season 29-34.

• Barry 1, Saint Leo 0: Ashley Likens drove in Brittany Anderson with an RBI double in the top of the seventh to lead the host Bucs (43-6) in the Division II regional championship.

BASEBALL

•  St. Petersburg 4, Broward CC 0: Tito Espinoza was 1 for 3 with a double, but the Seahawks (31-17) lost in the first game of the FCCAA State Championship Series at Winter Haven.

ROWING

• Barry: The Varsity 8+ team of Athena Corodimas (cox), Janelle Cross (stroke), Robin Cascioli, Elise Carlson, Rhiannon Doka, Stephanie Logsdon, Stephanie Ricker and Summerlin Knipe, advanced to the semifinals of the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia.
