Willingham put on DL, Carroll recalled

Left fielder Josh Willingham was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday, with Brett Carroll recalled from Triple A Albuquerque (N.M.).

Willingham hasn't played since Sunday in Milwaukee because of a sore lower back. Willingham has been placed on the DL retroactive to Monday, so if his back feels better, he could return May 13 in Cincinnati.

''It's one of those things,'' manager Fredi Gonzalez said. ``We couldn't play short so it was a decision we had to make. If everything goes well, he only misses 10 games.''

Willingham's .341 average leads the team and his six homers and 16 RBI both rank third. Carroll spent April 1-5 with the Marlins, going 1 for 8 with a triple. Carroll has been exceptional with Albuquerque of the Pacific Coast League, hitting .418 in 18 games with nine home runs and 23 RBI.

CHANGE AT THE TOP

With Willingham out, Gonzalez shook up the lineup, moving shortstop Hanley Ramirez from the leadoff spot to third in the order. Gonzalez said the Marlins are going to try different players out in the leadoff slot, adding Cody Ross might get some more playing time and hit in that position.

''The timing is right to move Ramirez into the three hole,'' Gonzalez said. ``Having [Mike] Jacobs back gives him a little protection there.''

Second baseman Dan Uggla also moved from second in the lineup to sixth. ''He can just go out there and swing the bat,'' Gonzalez said.

Alfredo Amezaga led off Friday with a double to center.

A GOOD NIGHT'S REST

Reliever Matt Lindstrom said his sore back felt better Friday after an unconventional sleeping arrangement the night before. Lindstrom said he slept half the night on the floor, but after feeling uncomfortable, ended up in his bed. He said he would be available in the bullpen Friday.
