No matter when or where American Heritage's nationally-ranked guard Kenny Boynton Jr. plays, a capacity crowd follows. The same should hold true Saturday when the 6-2 senior, ranked No. 7 in his class by Rivals.com, brings his scoring prowess to the Tournament of Champions Fall Basketball league at Miami Norland High School.
Boynton, who has standing offers from Duke, Florida and USC, Georgia Tech, among others, said he feeds off the crowd's energy.
''I look forward to the big show,'' said Boynton, who averaged a state-best 34.5 points as a Parade All-American a year ago. ``I always want to put on a bigger performance so I could give fans their money's worth and they could come back to watch me.''
Under fall league rules, teams are entered under their school's city. As such, Boynton and his Heritage teammates will represent Plantation against Richmond Heights (Coral Reef) and rising 6-4 junior guard Charles Hankerson at 4.
In the late game, Plantation takes on City of Miramar (Miramar), which got a huge confident boost after knocking off Fort Lauderdale (Dillard), the reigning 5A state champions, on Thursday.
Other intriguing first day matchups include Aventura (Dr. Krop) against Miami Lakes (Hialeah-Miami Lakes) and its huge frontline, and Overtown (Choice Academy) against Martavious Irving and Bryan Bynes-led Lauderdale Lakes (Boyd Anderson), a 2007-08 Class 6A state finalist.
Opa-Locka (Pace), the defending 4A champions, withdrew and was replaced by Pembroke Pines (Flanagan). That should give Khyle Marshall, a high-flying 6-6 forward an opportunity to shine. Last year, Marshall averaged 24.5 points and 12.5 rebounds and was named to the 6A All-State first team.
The top eight teams advance to the playoffs on Sunday. The quarterfinals start at 9 am and conclude with the championship game at 4.
Admission is $5 each day for adults. Children under 12 pay $3 for one day and $5 for the weekend pass.
