SPORTS BARS

Voters tab Beef O'Brady's the best -- bar none -- in South Florida

ftasker@MiamiHerald.com

We have a winner! Fans of basketball, brackets and beer voted in our online poll, more than 21,000-strong decreed that the best sports bar in South Florida is Beef O'Brady's in Sunrise.

In second place: Sports Grill on Sunset Drive in Kendall.

Our March Madness poll started two weeks ago, with readers' help, choosing the Elite Eight of beer, wings and big-screen TVs. We took two panels of four judges each -- rabid sports fans all -- to visit them, and narrowed it down to a Final Four. Then, by voting on MiamiHerald.com, fans and readers narrowed it to two, and have chosen a winner.

Debate was passionate. Worthy in energy if not always in logic of such orators as William Jennings Bryan, Daniel Webster and Simon Cowell.

You know what you like:

• ''Beef's has the coldest mugs, and cold beer makes me smile,'' Darrell posted.

• ''Beef's in Sunrise has 18 TVs, even in the men's room!'' Lonnie R raved.

• ''So how many TVs does Sports Grill have? Exactly 18, so I'm not seeing your point,'' Mike posted.

You raised such haunting questions as: Is it proper, when selling chicken wings, to charge extra for the blue cheese and celery sticks? Should a sports bathroom be clean, or is it enough to have TV monitors among the urinals?

You debated which was more family-friendly: ''My kids & I think we are in Chuck E. Cheese/Dandy Bear,'' Sports Grill fan R&R said.

You made such eloquent and persuasive arguments as ''Beefs rules!!! Sports Grill drools!!!!!'' Espozito Von posted.

You debated whose servers are hot and whose are lame. That wasn't very nice.

In the end, Beef O'Brady's won, 13,328 votes to Sports Grill's 8,449.

''We're thrilled,'' said Mike Jacobs, who owns Beef's with his wife, Samantha. ``Our fans really rallied around us. People just want a place that's comfortable, friendly and clean. And involved in the community.''

Oh, and fans, keep in mind it wasn't scientific or serious -- it was all in fun.

As voter Jim Scott said: ``We like both places. They're different.''
