    One of Miami Metrozoo's two jaguars died Wednesday during a medical procedure designed to stop his stomach problems. He was 3 years old.

    Palenque, who weighed 129 pounds, was one of the star attractions at the zoo's newest exhibit, Amazon and Beyond, said Ron Magill, the zoo's spokesman. Jaguars are solitary animals, so he was kept separate from his betrothed, Reina -- a female who was not yet ready for an intimate relationship.

    Maria Mayer, who lost Tuesday to Jorge Exposito by 320 votes in a heated race, had said she might contest the results based on allegations of improper electioneering at the polls by Exposito's camp.

  • Broward's Jim Notter named Superintendent of Year

    A group of Florida education nonprofit organizations has named Broward Schools Superintendent Jim Notter its Superintendent of the Year.

    The prize, from the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations, recognizes Notter for supporting the Broward Education Foundation, which is the school district's nonprofit fundraising arm. The Broward group provides college scholarships to high school seniors and grants to teachers for innovative projects.
