The Broward School District has named its outstanding mentors for the 2007-08 school year. Winners are: elementary, Roz Kresky, Broadview Elementary; intermediate, Anne Orvieto, Boyd Anderson High; co-mentor team, John and Jeannie Francis, Coconut Creek High; and mentoring program, Jill Michelson, Gator Run Elementary.
Kresky, 92, has walked several blocks to the elementary school over the course of four years to work with seven students with special needs. Orvieto, a mentor for three years, began working with a student during her junior year in high school and continued to help her through the college application and acceptance process. Husband and wife John and Jeannie Francis, mentoring for four years, provide individual attention to different students, giving them the support they need. Michelson, a registered dietitian, developed a Healthy Me mentoring program three years ago to educate students on the importance of nutrition and exercise.
Winners will be honored at the Community Involvement Awards luncheon on May 21 at the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale.
