Thieves and vandals struck at three town of Davie locations and cost the town $5,475. At the Davie Town Hall, 6591 Orange Dr., someone ripped nine receptacle boxes from their base, removed the switch from a condensing unit, broke eight light shades and bulbs from a walkway and a gazebo, and damaged a wood directional sign for visitors. Damage was estimated at $1,000.

When Ashleigh Robinson steps on stage to dance, she feels a joy that's been unparalleled in her 15 years. Earlier this year, Ashleigh, of Cooper City, was one of 80 dancers from across the country to be accepted into the Alvin Ailey Dance Company's summer program in New York. The five-week program, which costs $5,000 for airfare, room and board, and tuition, is a dream come true.

When the Children's Ballet Theatre Project takes the stage next weekend, it will be to the strains of live piano and strings. Instead of recordings, the troupe will be accompanied by local professional musicians in their spring program, Classical Interludes, set for Saturday and May 18 at the University Center for the Performing Arts in Davie.
POLICE REPORT
Smash-and-grab burglars have been busy in Davie. Between 5:15 and 5:30 a.m. April 28, someone smashed the driver's-side window of a woman's 2007 Honda Odyssey van while she took her child into the Room to Grow Academy, 2550 S. Flamingo Rd. The burglar reached in and grabbed the woman's purse from between the driver and passenger seats. The owner valued the the Coach purse at $860 and said it contained two uncashed checks totaling $3,850, as well as $400 in cash and credit cards.

Karen Ciampa appreciates a good challenge. At 56 years old, she already has competed in marathons. Later this week, she'll be one of 15 South Floridians hiking the Grand Canyon to raise money for cancer research and honor those already lost to the disease.

Helena Smith has lived across from the empty lot on Southwest Eighth Street in Davie for nearly 12 years. She was happy to spend part of her weekend recently helping transform the lot into a neighborhood park.
