Karen Ciampa appreciates a good challenge. At 56 years old, she already has competed in marathons. Later this week, she'll be one of 15 South Floridians hiking the Grand Canyon to raise money for cancer research and honor those already lost to the disease.

Helena Smith has lived across from the empty lot on Southwest Eighth Street in Davie for nearly 12 years. She was happy to spend part of her weekend recently helping transform the lot into a neighborhood park.

A year after the nation's deadliest school shooting, an effort has been launched in South Florida to focus on the safety and security of school campuses.

When the Children's Ballet Theatre Project takes the stage next weekend, it will be to the strains of live piano and strings. Instead of recordings, the troupe will be accompanied by local professional musicians in their spring program, Classical Interludes, set for Saturday and May 18 at the University Center for the Performing Arts in Davie.
POLICE REPORT
Smash-and-grab burglars have been busy in Davie. Between 5:15 and 5:30 a.m. April 28, someone smashed the driver's-side window of a woman's 2007 Honda Odyssey van while she took her child into the Room to Grow Academy, 2550 S. Flamingo Rd. The burglar reached in and grabbed the woman's purse from between the driver and passenger seats. The owner valued the the Coach purse at $860 and said it contained two uncashed checks totaling $3,850, as well as $400 in cash and credit cards.

Technology made the world a little smaller for fourth-graders at the University Lower School in Davie, who recently used live webcasts to quiz students in England about their lifestyles.

As Cooper City grew, so did Rina Nall. She's lived there for three decades, since she was 7 years old. In the city that bills itself as ''Something Special,'' Nall takes pride in the fact that she's raising her own family in the neighborhood where she grew up.

When Cleavon Brewster, 31, of Pembroke Pines, set out to be his own man and open his own business, he looked to his heroes. ''It's the dream of all dreams to make your own difference in the world,'' said Brewster, owner of the new Legends Barber Shop in western Davie.
POLICE REPORT
Two burglars in Davie said they were looking for a friend but they settled for $1,500 in cash and a cellphone. When a man and his wife told police that when they returned to their home in the 5700 block of Southwest 38th Street at 10:20 p.m. April 12, two men were inside.

Careen Hutchinson wants people to understand the complexity of African issues beyond what they see in movies. Hutchinson, a graduate student studying conflict resolution at Nova Southeastern University's Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, has organized forums on the 1994 Rwandan genocide and the Darfur crisis after visiting that troubled region last summer.
