MIAMI-DADE TRANSIT

New bus route to connect MIA, South Beach

achardy@ElNuevoHerald.com

Starting Dec. 13, a new bus route will connect Miami International Airport and South Beach -- a heavily traveled corridor used both by commuters and international tourists.

The announcement by Miami-Dade Transit chief Harpal Kapoor comes after an El Nuevo Herald columnist criticized transit officials for not having such a route between the two locations.

The column, written by Daniel Shoer Roth, appeared in Spanish on Nov. 4 and in English Tuesday.

In an interview with El Nuevo Herald, however, Kapoor said the newspaper column had nothing to do with the creation of the new bus route.

``It has been in the works for a long time,'' said Kapoor.

The new bus route, which will be called the Airport-Beach Flyer route, will give riders direct express service from MIA to Miami Beach via State Road 112, with only one stop at the Earlington Heights Metrorail station before reaching the beach.

Kapoor said the stop at the Metrorail station would enable passengers to transfer to downtown Miami.

Trips from MIA to Miami Beach will cost $2.35 and take about 30 minutes, according to Kapoor.
