Mourning Eight Belles
Posted on Fri, May. 09, 2008
Re the May 7 letter Animals in sports: The writer said that she has no sympathy for the trainer and owner of Eight Belles. She does not understand horse racing. My husband is a trainer and had a starter in the Kentucky Derby.
He met trainer Larry Jones, who has an excellent reputation and would never have put his filly in a race that she could not handle. The event was catastrophic and inexplicable. It has nothing to do with steroids or mistreatment by the jockey.
For the people who knew Eight Belles best -- her trainer, exercise rider, groom and hot walker, their grief is real. Their beautiful filly is gone.
