Gelber a leader in the House

The Legislature concluded its general session last week, ending Miami Republican Rep. Marco Rubio's historic tenure as House speaker. It also brought the conclusion of Rep. Dan Gelber's successful and distinguished tenure as minority leader in the House.

Although Gelber's term as minority leader was during the past two years, he served in that role, de facto, for eight years by virtue of his razor-sharp intellect, passion for the well-being of his constituents, a deep understanding of public policy, honesty and good nature. Gelber was the eloquent and effective champion of important issues: education, healthcare, public safety and social services. His formidable skills repeatedly made him his caucus' primary advocate to go toe to toe with Govs. Jeb Bush and Charlie Crist and House Speakers Allan Bense and Rubio. These men, although disagreeing with Gelber on many issues, have the greatest respect for his formidable skills and conviction to his ideals.

Not only has Gelber been a formidable political force, but he also has been a statesman. He comported himself with civility and professionalism. He understood that, although politics may be a contact sport, its purpose is to advance the public good and not to destroy one's political adversary. His gifted and good-natured eloquence helped keep political discourse at a high level, even during difficult times when partisan passions got overheated.

Floridians owe a great deal of gratitude to Gelber, and his family, for his honorable leadership and distinguished career of public service. He has been a great role model, particularly to future generations.
