Dems handed a mess

The writer of the May 1 letter Dems ineffective mistakenly believes that the Democrats have a working control of Congress. They would need another 60 votes to end a filibuster or override a veto by President Bush.
Democrats inherited an economy sliding downhill as a result of the Republican tax cuts for the wealthy and a disastrous war in Iraq. As far as energy goes, Republicans ever since the Reagan administration have mocked conservation and alternative energy. A Republican Congress and executive branch was empowered for six years, but there were no substantial ideas offered for weaning us from foreign oil.
Even if the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge were drilled immediately, the oil there would last a few months at best. The energy crisis needs to be laid at the feet of what's really to blame: Republican indifference and support for the Saudis and Big Oil.
