TV judges await the verdict for a Daytime Emmy

jfleischman@MiamiHerald.com

TV judges Marilyn Milian (The People's Court) and David Young (Judge David Young), residents of South Florida, are contenders for a Daytime Emmy in a new category -- Outstanding Legal/Courtroom Program.

The other nominees: Judith Sheindlin of Judge Judy; CristinaPerez of Cristina's Court, and Glenda Hatchett of Judge Hatchett. (Hatchett's show has been canceled, although Sony Pictures Television will offer a ''best of'' package to stations beginning in September.)

Milian, 47, is thrilled to be considered, win or lose. ''I don't need to be prom queen,'' she quips. ''I'm just happy to go to the prom. I want to walk that red carpet with my husband.'' She's married to Miami-Dade Circuit Judge John Schlesinger.

Young, 49, says he was ''absolutely flabbergasted'' at his nomination. After all, he says, he's a TV rookie -- his show launched last September. ''There are so many others who've been doing it much longer and have such a good reputation that I never thought that the new kid on the block would be able to compete.'' He wants to walk the red carpet with his partner, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Scott Bernstein.

Milian and Young don't yet know whether their category will be included in the live telecast on ABC, at 8 p.m. June 20 from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. If not, they'll attend the creative arts and entertainment awards ceremony June 13 at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Rose Theater in New York.

SLIP OF THE TONGUE

CNN Atlanta-based anchor Rick Sanchez, tossing to a break Sunday night during coverage of BarackObama's speech at the Jefferson Jackson Dinner in Indianapolis, told viewers: ``You are now also watching Seven news here -- I mean, CNN -- tonight at 10 as we bring you this story and many others. Stay with us.''

Oops. Seven news? ''I caught myself,'' says Sanchez, 49, a veteran anchor at South Florida's Channel 7, WSVN-Fox 7. Sanchez, who smiled when he corrected the misspeak, says it's not the first time he's made that mistake. ''And it probably won't be the last.'' It's seven years -- this month -- since he anchored at 7.

HAMMING IT UP

The lady in the red '04 Lexus SC 430 with the tag HAM CHEZ is Susan Bleemer, longtime South Florida chef and caterer. Her three companies, based in Doral, are called Ham and Cheese, Caffe Cappuccino and Catering The Event.

''I make an awful lot of ham and cheese sandwiches,'' Bleemer says. But don't think pre-sliced stuff and white bread. Bleemer, 54, and chef Ralph Vazquez Jr., 42, prepare prosciutto with Brie on French bread, Serrano ham with smoked provolone on croissant. Other specialties are picadillo in plantain cups topped with sour cream; sundried tomato-Asiago polenta cakes; and wontons filled with confit of corn, mango and duck.

Among her clients: Oscar De La Hoya; Dwayne ''The Rock'' Johnson; Hialeah Mayor Julio Robaina; Tim K. Brown, president and CEO of Sysco Food Services of South Florida; and Rudy Perez, Grammy-winning songwriter. Also: Carnival Cruise Lines; Discovery Channel; WFOR-CBS4, and Dole Fresh Flowers.

Catering the Event is on a list of Miami-Dade County-approved vendors who are invited to compete to provide food in the event of an emergency, such as a hurricane. Bleemer says she's prepared to whip up 9,000 meals in five hours.
