Missing money a few clicks away

You may be richer than you think.

If you've ever lost track of some money -- a rebate, a bank account, stocks, utility deposits, a paycheck, an insurance premium -- the state could be holding onto it for you.

After five years that a company or financial institution loses touch with you, it must turn over any funds it owes you to the state of residence on file.

To see if there's money sitting around in your name, check out these sites:

• www.fltreasurehunt.org: The Florida Department of Financial Services' Bureau of Unclaimed Property holds money due to Florida residents (888-258-2253).

• www.missingmoney.com: If you've lived in another state, check out this site, which aggregates information from 39 states and territories. If the state you're searching for isn't listed, contact its financial services department.
