ACTION LINE'S TOP 40

Donations

• Q: Where can I donate old cellphones?

• A: You have several options. Here are a few:

• Save A Life Campaign: Collects and distributes cellphones to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

When donating to the organization, be aware that chargers and accessories aren't required; the phones are programmed only to dial 911.

Donations are tax-deductible. For information, contact Pamela Stack at 305-490-2279 or pamela@savealifecampaign.org.

• Verizon Wireless HopeLine: Phones from any wireless carrier can be dropped off at Verizon Wireless stores. Many phones are then refurbished for use by domestic violence victims. Phones that can't be refurbished are sold to recycling companies, with all proceeds donated to local domestic violence agencies.

Through HopeLine, Verizon has collected more than two million cellphones and contributed more than $1 million to agencies that include Women in Distress in Broward County and the Safespace Foundation of Miami.

To find a store location, visit www.verizonwireless.com.

• Secure the Call: A nonprofit organization with the mission of ``helping local communities convert as many old cellphones into 911-emergency phones as possible.''

Donations are tax-deductible, and deduction forms can be downloaded from the foundation's site -- www.donatemycellphone.org -- as well as a printer-friendly mailing label, should you decide to mail in a phone.

For more information, visit the website or call 888-88-DONATE (888-883-6628).

• Cell Phones for Soldiers: AT&T Wireless is partnering with this nonprofit that recycles old phones and uses the proceeds to provide free, prepaid calling cards to U.S. troops and their families. All AT&T Wireless stores from Vero Beach to Key West will be drop-off sites by July 4.

For more information and to locate a drop-off site near you, visit the nonprofit at www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com.
