Q: I have a really expensive hearing aid, which is working fine, that I would like to donate to an organization that could use it. Can Action Line help me find someone who could use it?
A: In Broward County, the League for the Hard of Hearing gives refurbished hearing aids to needy people who can't afford to buy. Donations may be taken or mailed to 2800 W. Oakland Park Blvd., Suite 306, Oakland Park 33311. It's open from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 5 p.m. weekdays; call 954-731-7200.
In Miami-Dade, the Hearing and Speech Center of Florida, 9425 SW 72nd St., Suite 261, Miami 33173, accepts hearing devices in person or by mail. It's open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays; call 305-271-7343. The nonprofit agency dispenses them to clients as loaners while theirs are being repaired. Extended warranties, for the most part, cover the expense of repairs.
Q: I have furniture I'd like to donate. What social service organizations should I contact?
A: There are several organizations in South Florida that welcome furniture and household items. However, due to limited resources or lack of storage, don't be surprised if some are unable to accept your generous donation. Here's a list to work from:
The Salvation Army needs two weeks' notice for such requests. In Miami-Dade, it's at 305-573-4200; in Broward, 954-463-3725. Drivers are off on Sundays and Mondays.
Lutheran Services Florida picks up household furniture in Miami-Dade and places it in fully appointed housing that it provides for families in distress. However, due to the limited availability of trucks and drivers, pickups need to be requested at least a week in advance; 305-969-8700, http://www.lsfnet.org.
The Miami Rescue Mission also picks up but only if furniture is in ''good'' condition -- no rips, tears or stains. Residents in Miami-Dade and Broward counties should call 800-817-HOPE (4673), toll-free.
The Broward Partnership for the Homeless, http://www.bphi.org/, at 920 NW Seventh Ave., Fort Lauderdale, also accepts furniture; 954-832-7031.
Douglas Gardens Thrift Shop of the Miami Jewish Home and Hospital for the Aged. Its stores are at 5713 NW 27th Ave., Miami, and 3194 W. Hallandale Beach Blvd., Hallandale Beach; 305-638-1900 or 800-876-4483. Both locations are open seven days a week.
Habitat for Humanity has two ReStores in Miami-Dade: 3800 NW 22nd Ave., Miami, immediately south of State Road 112 (305-637-4913), and 19100 SW 106th Ave., Cutler Bay (305-259-2891). Both are open Tuesday through Saturday. Call 305-637-4913 to arrange a pickup. The Broward ReStore is at 513 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale (954-763-7771). It's open Monday through Saturday. Be precise about your need for a pickup.
