Comet bobsled ride lets anyone be an Olympian for a day

The Denver Post

Goldener Hirsch Inn (7570 Royal St. E., 435-649-7770, www.goldenerhirschinn.com) does the Austrian ski chalet thing right, offering an intimate setting mid-mountain at Deer Valley Resort (which means ski-in, ski-out). The rooms are sweetly decorated with hand-painted furnishings, and the bathrooms are updated with spa tubs and granite; most rooms have private balconies and wood-burning fireplaces. Other draws include underground parking, ski valet, indoor-outdoor hot tubs and free breakfast that includes made-to-order omelettes and waffles. Rates start at $469 per night in winter.

Newpark Hotel (1476 Newpark Blvd., 877-649-3600, www/newparkresort.com) isn't like other Park City lodgings -- it's incredibly reasonably priced, even in winter, and this condo hotel has a more contemporary look and feel. A one-bedroom suite comes with a living room with sleeper sofa, fully stocked kitchen, spa tub, heated floors and private balcony with hot tub for $169 a night. In February. Granted, this isn't ski-in/ski-out -- you're about 10 minutes from The Canyons and 15 from Park City. Rates start at $129 a night in winter for queen bed with queen sleeper sofa and mini kitchen setup; some time periods do have a minimum-stay requirement.

Stein Eriksen Lodge (7700 Stein Way, 435-649-3700, www.steinlodge.com) does its namesake, the Norwegian Olympic gold medalist, proud by constantly striving (and mostly succeeding) to be a standard for luxury. The Deer Valley lodging, which sits mid-mountain and thus offers ski-in/ski-out right to the Sterling Express lift, is expansive, with 180 rooms, all with jetted tubs and DVD players, and some with hot tubs on the decks or fireplaces. The sprawling complex has two lodges, one for arrivals, the other housing the restaurant and lounge, a pool and hot tub, spa and state-of-the-art fitness center and inviting relaxation area. One of the best amenities would have to be the included buffet breakfast, with an eggs Benedict of the day, maple-glazed bacon and quite a spread of pastries, fresh fruit and house-made granola. Rates start at $835 in winter.

Washington School Inn (543 Park Ave., 435-649-3800, www.washingtonschoolinn.com) is just two blocks from the Park City Town Lift and adorable, an 1889 building that was indeed a school, with the original, oversized windows that let in plenty of light and 15 cozy rooms filled with period furniture and feather beds. Private bathrooms, robes, good products and a breakfast buffet each morning featuring a tasty entree and plenty of fresh fruit and pastries make this a top B&B pick. Rates start at $185 per night in winter.

DINE: Alpine Internet CoffeeHouse & Cybercafi, 738 Main St., 435-649-0051, www.alpineinternet.net). Some comfy sofa chairs, plenty of tables, an invitation to linger, tons of computers and access with a purchase -- as well as top-notch lattes with the pretty swirly patterns -- make Alpine a great choice for a cold, snowy day or post-slope check on e-mail. Tasty baked goods too.

350 Main (350 Main St., 435-649-3140, 350main.com) makes itself easy to find and hard to leave. Everything about this updated brasserie is delightful, from the hip but still inviting and even romantic dining room -- this is a good place to sit at the bar, because the food service means you don't have to join the ''club'' -- to the inventive and often healthful menu (check out the separate ''menu de santi,'' which features dishes that are high in antioxidants and flavor but low in fats and calories). Love the ahi and hamachi ''tower,'' love the coconut-enhanced lobster bisque, love the salads. Great service and wine list.
