Mother's Day messages

We invited our readers to write Mother's Day cards that they couldn't find in a store. Here's one sent in by Dr. Elizabeth Vainder:

Happy Mother's Day to all of the mothers that love unconditionally, give all of themselves without expecting anything in return, and speak for their children who have no voice.

Dear Mami:

I think all moms have this inner hope that every year on Mother's Day they're child will suddenly transform into some wonder-kid that gets straight A's, does all they're chores, and gives their mom a gift they can actually use (not just another macaroni necklace that was glued together in 5 minutes). Lucky for you, I'm already a perfect child, so it makes your job that much easier! :) My job is also made easier because you, too, are such a fantastic mom! 364 days of the year, we show our love for each other in really unusual ways -- like the times you're driving and I play the one song I know raises your blood pressure just to bother you; the times you remind me that you feel like the mother of 6 boys because of the amount of food I eat; those moments I have to hand you several tissues to stop your laughter tears
From: flooding our house; and especially those house-cleaning days when you suddenly expect me to address you as ''Mafalda'' and I become ''Cachucha!'' The way I see it, Mother's Day is that one day a year that we stop our everyday craziness and I actually acknowledge that it's not ''Let-Me-See-Just-How-Crazy-I-Can-Drive-Mami Day,'' but Mother's Day -- and I love you. Happy Mother's Day to the best mom in the world!

With Love,

Bernie (your perfect child!)

From: Anthony Arzillo

Happy Mother's Day to my loving and beautiful wife. It is with great love that I say this as you are my love and my life.

Anthony Michael Arzillo

From: Jeremy Varsallone

Happy Mother's Day. There are many cards that say thank you or we love you but one of those cannot express all the care and joy that you bring. Some people say that their parents are the best. Well, I can say that is a lie because I know mine is.

From: Mackendy Strachan

Who else could it be but thee, the one who gave birth to me and shepherded me ever since I was a baby. She's the one I trust, the who gave me nothing but kisses and hugs. She's my angel because she's always been there for me. That's why I love my mother with all my H.E.A.R.T.

Happy Mother's Day

From: Regina Blain Martins

Dear Miami Herald Readers:

Seriously, how can you write about your feelings for your Mom in such a limited amount of space. But my Mom would say, ''Gina, you'll never know unless you try.'' So Mom, today I'm going to take your advice (you can close your mouth and wipe that shocked look off your face) because I'm going to finally jump in with both feet and just try.

I don't have any children of my own and yet if I did, I would never come close to being as perfect a Mom as you are to me. The many sacrifices you went through and yet, you never once complained about ANY one of them, makes me feel so humbled and honored to have you as my Mom. I refuse to go into details, because certain things are private (and dare I say, ``embarrassing''), but I must mention a few things that I want to honor you for: Deciding to go back to school, and maybe miss my first step or my first word, must have cut your heart out, but I knew you did it for me. You wanted me to go to a private Christian school and learn things that would mold me and help me to become the young lady that I am today. You knew the tuition would be high and that we'd have to cut corners, but you did it anyways, because you loved me.

Mom, you never judged me nor criticized me, even though we both knew I came up with some pretty strange ideas at times. When I felt like there's no one in the world who would understand me, I knew that all I had to do was go to you, and you'd listen and somehow used that, ''Mommy Magic,'' and all would be right again. When I had a secret and I needed to tell someone, I knew that you'd keep it. When it seemed that all my faith in life was lost, you'd restore it for me. God, I thank you so much for that. You held my hand when I was scarred and you never let go. You dried my tears and even blew my nose when I cried so hard and couldn't even do it for myself. You gave me strength when I didn't have any and when you looked at me with those loving eyes, I knew, I just knew, that it would always be all right, as long as I had you in my life.

You've always had and still have the patience and grace of an angel. I guess that's why I'm always telling you, ''Mom, when you pass away, you're going to have the heaviest cloud. Because your wings will be made of solid gold and your halo will be so big a standard cloud will be too small, that you'd cover the sun's rays.'' Yes, I know that sounds childish, but that's how my heart feels.

Mom, I'm writing you all this in The Miami Herald, because I wanted the world to know how precious you are to me. You are my gift and by everything you do for me, I know that I am yours. One last thing, ''I know God is the one who gave me to you, but I truly believe it was the other way around; God gave you to me -- and for that, I will always be grateful.'' Thank you for loving me and for being my Mom.
From: my heart to yours, if children were able to pick their parents, I would have and still will, pick you. Happy Mother's Day Zoila Blain Martns!Love, your daughter, Regina

From: Suzan Katz Imber

To My Dear Mother Esther: This is a most difficult Mother's Day for me to wish you the happiest Mother's Day. Due to your recent stroke and knowing how much you are trying to improve to come home, I know it will not be the easiest of Mother's Day for you. I also realize there might not be many more Mother's Days to celebrate, making this the most difficult. You are such a special, caring person, and if anyone deserves the best it is you. So, my dear mother, I wish that this is your best Mother's Day ever and we will have many more to celebrate together.

I love you!!

Much love,

Suzan, Barry, Michael and Sophia

From: Anette Garrison

She is a statue, strong and steady,

making others shrink when she speaks,

because they know she is right,

and they believe in her words.

She has always been behind me

Enduring cold, metal bleachers to urge me on

even If I didn't feel that I was that good.

She has sat next to me, encouraged my intelligence

and made my art have meaning.

She passed down her own sense of justice,

because of her, I never settle for less than I deserve.

We have had wars and tears, battles and scars,

but they have healed.

She will always be the soul within me,

because she is my MOM.

From: Valerie Yoda

Don't you just love mothers? They're always there to nurture and care for you. They show you their love unconditionally and pick you up when you fall. They are the stars that make up the night; without them nothing would be the same.

From: Gloria Heitner

A Mother's Day Poem:

Most of us have feelings for

The person we call Mother

But I'm aware that I was blessed

With a mom that's like no other.

From: the time that I was born

You've been there day and night

To guide me through the good and bad

And teach me wrong
From: right.

As years elapsed and I grew up

Your presence didn't falter.

There's nothing in the ties we have

That I would want to alter.

From: you I've learned just what it means

To sacrifice and give,

To always be there for your child

As long as you both live.

We have a special bond, we two,

That never can be broken.

It transcends age and time, although

Sometimes it is unspoken.

Our mother-daughter give and take

Is firm and does not bend

But what makes me the happiest

Is that you are my friend.

So on such an important day

I don't know where to start

To let you know that I'll always

Love you with all my heart.

From: Eduardo Noguera

Mom, I wish you a happy Mother's Day to you and every mother out there for having us live in this world. Thank you for what you've done for us in our lives.

From: Emily Martinez-Lanza

Dear Mom,

The mother is the source of existence.

She guides the youth that soon will guide the world.

She nurtures my worries with persistence.

She is there for every event unfurled.

And in the race of life she cheers me on.

I want to win that race to prove to her,

The success that to me she has drawn,

'Cause such a mother will not let me err.

Her love has given me ability

And confidence to show the best of me.

Her lessons of responsibility,

And how to live my life have made me free.

With her I've grown to be who I am now,

And to reach success and happiness I vow.

I love you Mom and I wrote this poem to commemorate how much you mean to me. You have made me who I am, and I owe everything in this world to you.

Happy Mother's Day.

Love,

Emily

From: Jamsine Moore Mangone

I'm wishing all mothers that have worked so hard to raise their families with a healthy life a happy Mother's Day!!!! I myself am a child of a loving mother that works so hard to take care of me and provide all of my needs. On this very special day I want every mother to sit back, relax, and enjoy a day just made for you!!! It might be hard for all mothers to do that when they have to take care of things they have to do because I know that I am one of those kids that have to be active. But again I wish you a happy, happy Mothers Day!!!

From: Elizabeth Vainder, M.D.

Happy Mother's Day to all of the mothers that love unconditionally, give all of themselves without expecting anything in return, and speak for their children who have no voice. There is nothing more sacred than the love of a mother.

From: Alana L. Walker

My Mommy, yes I still call her ''Mommy'' at 25 years old. She is my Mommy because she never missed one swim practice, needless to say the swim meets, and now she never misses one of anything. She is my No. 1 fan and protector; she is the positive thought in my head; she is my forever strength; she is my Mother, soon to be grandmother, but still my MOMMY. Mommy, I love you.

From: Rick Levenosn

Happy Mother's Day Stepmom! I hope you don't think you're special only one day each year, because you came into my life and made all my days special.

From: Carlos A Gonzalez

You guide our flight

Grandma:

Because of you:

I'm only in daycare half a day instead of a full day.

Because of you:

My mommy and daddy can go to work knowing that I'm in good hands.

Because of you:

I get to go to the park and be on the swing every afternoon.

For all of this and so much more, I thank you.

You mean the world to me.

I love you,

Your 9-month-old grandson Sebastian Villegas

From: Elizabeth Amore

Mother, you taught me how to love

When you caressed my face with your fingertips

When you combed back my hair with your fingers

When you said you loved me unconditionally and meant it

When you said you would stand by me come what may and did it

Thank you for teaching me how, so that one day I may follow in your footsteps with my children.

From: John Lowe

Your kindness has no limits -- and my understanding of your loveliness grows with each day, year by year.

From: Jennifer Hughes

Dear Mom,

I finally figured out that life is not fair; words do hurt and love is not blind. Thank you for giving me life! Being a mom myself, I do not know how you remained so strong with all life threw at you. Your skin cancer, breast cancer (twice), thyroid tumor and tumor on your spinal cord. You are alive and in the best spirits. I can only hope and pray that one day I can grow into the classy, devoted, beautiful and talented mother you were to me. One day I will find a way to pay you back for all the wonderful things you have given to me and my family. That would be in the millions! I would give anything to be able to give back to you, thanks!

From: Sgt. Tanner, Jeffrey A.C.

Dear Mom,

Ever since the day I was born,

I know your heart has been torn,

That even though someday I'd move away,

You would always know just what to say,

Either through a letter or a phone call,

You have been there through it all,

When Dad passed I was a mess,

But you helped me do my best,

You were even there with a pat on the back,

On my deepest, darkest days in Iraq,

I wanted to take some time today to say in my own way,

I love you Mom

and Happy Mother's Day.

Love,

Sgt. Jeffrey A.C. Tanner

P.S. I'm a poet and didn't even know it.

From: Eleanor Carrillo

Hi Mom,

Your first great-granddaughter, Sonia, was born January 10th! She is so beautiful! Oh, how I wish you were still alive to meet her. You would be so proud of her daddy: He is wonderful in his new role.

I miss you!

From: Sandra Valdes

Olgui, you are everything I feel a mother is and more. Your love for Mica is unconditional and she lights up in your presence. God knew what a great mother you would be when he chose you to find this little angel in the Ukraine. Everyone can see the great you have been and all the love you give when they look at Mica. Thank you for everything you do every day.

From: Tracydawn Poultie

To a wonderful mother and daughter. I love you very, very much.

Love, Mom

From: Billy D. Hudson

Born in this world with nothin' but air. But in a mother's arm tender lovin' care after nine months of laborin' pain. Not once do mothers complain when a child acts out. Mothers defend because a mother's love is to the end.

From: Zeo

Mother,

You were selfish, abusive and arrogant. Because of that I will never give you grandchildren.

My Mother,

I hope that I gave you all you gave me!

From: Linda G.

Dear Mom:

I did what you said,

I turned off the TV and went to bed,

And like you predicted in the middle of the night

I awoke with a start and a terrible fright.

But not
From: the program with its blood and gore

And not due to how loud it is when Dad snores,

It seems I remembered that today is the day

When kids all over get a chance to say:

You go to bed and I'll bring you some tea

And I'll give you this card (that was written by me)

And we'll lie on your bed and talk about when

I used to be trouble, but you'd have me again.

Since I turned out to be the joy in your life

And one of the reasons you like being a wife.

So what usually happens on your special day?

Is you make me feel special in my own way.

In the end I think I should be having the tea

And wonder why there's no Mom's day for me

And that's just about when a giggle comes out of you:

``You'll get yours my pretty and your little dog too!''

From: Kathy Sinclair Abay

Dear Mom, (Sarah Sinclair)

This is a time of year we never forget, and just in case you think we don't notice -- this is for you!

As a teenager that came to NYC alone
From: Ireland, and a person with a work ethic you instilled in us all, we learned how to achieve a better life by working, balancing a family, school and church.

You and Dad moved to Miami in the late '50s and then to South Miami Heights to start a family. In the '70s we moved across the highway to Cutler Ridge -- to a home with TWO bathrooms, now known as Cutler Bay, where you and Dad remain.

We are very proud of you and of the life we enjoyed because of you and Dad and your hard work. You raised five kids while waitressing, you managed to get us all to Boy Scout meetings, Brownies & Girl Scout meetings, church every Sunday and CCD classes every week, piano lessons, baseball and football games and any other activities that we were involved in!

Friends were always welcome in our home, and still come around! We each had our own responsibilities. We each were required to work to purchase our first vehicle and maintain it and the insurance -- and each of us did buy our own cars.

We were taught to respect authority and if a teacher complained about one of us, boy were we in trouble when we got home. You did not fool around when it came to discipline.

You and Dad made sure we had a nice vacation every year, and sometimes we even were allowed to bring a friend along! As adults we wonder how you guys were able to swing it!

Well now you and Dad are older and your back is hurting you as bad as ever, and Dad being sick the past several years he has now been stricken with rheumatoid arthritis leaving him almost helpless at times.

He needs you now more than ever, and you have taken the challenge. You are there for him -- as well as for us 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

You raised five productive, loving children who in turn have given you 10 wonderful grandchildren, which along with that comes the worries, the praises and the concerns. In the end, you have the honor and the satisfaction of having a wonderful family that loves you and what you do, very much!

We love you!

Kathy & Leonel, Linda & Raul, Ray & Ileana, Elaine & Andy, and Beth & Kevin and our kids.
