    String trimmers can severely damage or kill shrubs and trees when improperly used. Most shrubs and trees in South Florida have a very thin layer of bark that is easily damaged by trimmers. Under the bark are cells called phloem that transport the food the leaves produce down to the roots. If these cells are damaged, no food gets to the roots and they die.
